The festival, which marks the 2nd anniversary of the re-opening of the centre, will allow visitors to choose from and experience a multitude of Malay cultural MALAY CULTUREFEST (MCF) 2014 CULTUREFEST MALAY expressions - from the passive witnessing, to the sensory and the participatory. In conjunction with the festival, MHC will also offer free entry for all visitors to its permanent galleries and also its new special exhibition, Budi Daya. DATE VENUE ADMISSION 13 October – Lawn Free 2 November All programmes are free and will be conducted in English unless otherwise stated. LAUNCH CEREMONY OF MALAY CULTUREFEST & BUDI DAYA EXHIBITION Join us for the launch of our Malay CultureFest 2014 and Budi Daya special exhibition and experience a musical journey entitled “The Rhythms of the Nusantara” which will trace the beats and songs of Java, Minangkabau, Terengganu and the Johor Riau region, thus highlighting the diversity of Singapore Malays. DATE TIME VENUE Friday & Saturday, 8.30pm – 10.00pm Auditorium 17 & 18 October FUSION WAYANG KULIT* (In conjunction with Budi Daya Exhibition) For the first time in Singapore, watch a Star Wars- inspired performance of Fusion Wayang Kulit! Grab this chance to witness and compare wayang kulit in its traditional form and one that visual artist Tintoy Chuo and his team have created. DATE TIME VENUE Friday & Saturday, 8.30pm – 10.30pm Auditorium 31 October & 1 November GHAZAL OF THE OCEAN LOVE This year, MHC is paying tribute to Ghazal’s very own ‘wailing nightingale’, the songstress Rosiah Chik, who voice resonated through the airwaves in the 60s and 70s with love poems, syair, gurindam which embodies Ghazal music. Expect a modern twist to classical ghazal with improvisations from the ‘Arkestra’ and traditional instruments such as the gambus and tabla. Whether you are a serious film buff or looking for a weekend activity, join us for a picnic under the stars as we screen classic favourites and new offerings right here on our lawn. So bring your picnic mat, family and friends and soak in the magical movie atmosphere at the Malay Heritage Centre. MALAY CULTUREFEST PROGRAMMES – FILMS CULTUREFEST MALAY DATE TIME Thursday & Friday, 8.30pm onwards 23 & 24 October FENOMENA(1990) | THURSDAY, 23 OCTOBER In Malay, without English subtitles. In Fenomena, we follow the story of Isabella, a girl who returned from London to Terengganu, Malaysia. Suffering from a mysterious illness and diagnosed with only 6 more months to live, Isabella was determined to find a cure. Her search brought her back to Bukit Besi, where her father’s ex-gardener, Pak Labib, who is also a traditional healer, lives. Would Isabella be able to find her the cure to her mysterious illness? BUNOHAN(2012) | FRIDAY, 24 OCTOBER In Malay, with English subtitles. Bunohan tells the tragic story of three estranged brothers, Bakar, Adil and Ilham. Set in the rural village of Bunohan, Ilham is hired to kill Adil who is on the run after escaping from an illegal kickboxing tournament. Bakar, a seemingly pious and filial son returns back to the village with a dark agenda as he tries to convince their ailing father to sell their land. In this village, fate has brought the three brothers together once again as they struggle with their own desires and dark past. 06 | ARTS OF THE MALAY WORLD WORLD PROGRAMMES – ARTS OF THE MALAY CULTUREFEST MALAY SILAT SHOWCASE Join us as NTU’s Silat Club present to us a special showcase on the art of silat. The showcase, which includes a synchronized trio demonstration, will also have an interactive portion where visitors get to learn some silat moves. DATE TIME VENUE Sunday, 19 October 4.30pm – 5.30pm Lawn CERITA HIKAYAT AGUS NUR AMAL & WAYANG BEBER* Young visitors and families can participate in this interactive story telling programme by Agus Nur Amal, which merges traditional storytelling with the use of found items and props. To pair with Agus Nur Amal’s storytelling is a collaboration between Ethnic Shadows and Dani Iswardana. The collaboration introduces a fascinating story telling genre, which utilises a pictured scroll. A Budi Daya exhibition programme. DATE TIME VENUE Saturday & Sunday, 8.00pm – 10.00pm Auditorium 25 & 26 October *Performance will be held in Malay KUDA KEPANG SHOWCASE The kuda kepang is a uniquely Javanese activity which usually accompanies weddings or coming of age rituals. However, the form can also be practiced on its own as a showcase of human physic and as a death defying spectacle. DATE TIME VENUE Sunday, 2 November 5.00pm – 7.00pm Lawn 07 | DANCE & MUSIC ULEK MAYANG SHOWCASE Ulek Mayang is ritualised dance performance that is usually held during harvest or prior to fishing season. This folk performance and song can today be found in film and pop music but the original form is still performed in the rural parts of Terengganu. DATE TIME VENUE Tuesday, 14 October 8.30pm – 9.30pm Lawn GAMELAN ASMARADANA Enjoy a relaxing evening of Sundanese music from West Java. Don’t miss out as Gamelan Asmaradana brings to you an exciting performance of traditional pieces with upbeat and catchy Jaipong dance tunes! DATE TIME VENUE Wednesday, 15 October 8.30pm – 9.30pm MHC Plaza NEIGHBOURHOOD SKETCHES: LANGKAH NADA KITA Neighbourhood sketches presents to you a showcase of traditional Malay music in Singapore. This month, we pay tribute to Malay music icons such as the famous P. Ramlee, Hamzah Dolmat, Wandly Yazid, Zubir Said and many more! MALAY CULTUREFEST PROGRAMMES – DANCE & MUSIC PROGRAMMES – DANCE CULTUREFEST MALAY DATE TIME VENUE Wednesday & Thursday 8.30pm – 9.30pm MHC Plaza 22 & 23 October CULTIVATED ROOTS: WORK IN PROGRESS Our art incubation group, Kaizen will be having their first showcase featuring site- specific dances performed around the Malay Heritage Centre’s compound. DATE TIME VENUE Wednesday, 29 October 8.30pm – 9.30pm MHC Compound SAMRAH DANCE Bedok Green and Yuying Secondary School’s Malay Dance Club showcases a unique presentation of zapin and samrah dance. With the utilisation of props such as the tikar mengkuang and tampi, this special dance collaboration is set to mesmerise the crowd. DATE TIME VENUE Thursday, 30 October 4.30pm – 5.30pm Courtyard 2 08 | LECTURE & WORKSHOPS & WORKSHOPS PROGRAMMES – LECTURE CULTUREFEST MALAY SACRED SIRIH: TRADITIONS & SYMBOLISM IN THE MALAY WORLD The talk is about the culture behind the objects.
