SC048637 2 Structure, Governance and Management Constitution The charity is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO). It was registered in its current legal form on 21 August 2018. The charity was previously an unincorporated association but changed its legal form to a SCIO. The assets of the unincorporated association were transferred to the SCIO on the 21 August 2018. It has a single tier structure and as such the trustees are the members of the charity. The charity trustees have certain legal duties under the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005. Powers The organisation has power to do anything which is calculated to further its purposes or is conducive or incidental to doing so. No part of the income or property of the organisation may be paid or transferred (directly or indirectly) to the charity trustees - either in the course of the organisation’s existence or on dissolution - except where this is done in direct furtherance of the organisation’s purposes. Appointment of trustees The directors are the charity’s trustees. Trustees are elected at the annual general meeting which is held in October. There must be a minimum of three and a maximum of seven trustees. The trustees met four times during the period of this report. Objectives and Activities Charitable purposes The charity’s charitable purposes are: • The advancement of the arts, heritage, unique history and culture of the island of Ensay in the Outer Hebrides in addition to the preservation, maintenance, restoration, upkeep and use of the historic Ensay Chapel and grounds • The advancement of citizenship and greater community involvement through the promotion of volunteering to care for and celebrate the unique character and situation of Ensay Chapel, and to promote greater public understanding and pride in the local heritage of Ensay • The advancement of religion through the organising of an annual pilgrimage and worship services in the Ensay Chapel conducted by the Episcopal Church. SC048637 3 Achievements The charity has had several strands of activity since becoming an SCIO. First, we have drawn up a schedule of repairs and renovations to the structure of Ensay Chapel, and to the grounds surrounding it. A party of volunteers went to the island during the summer months to improve the drainage on the surrounding land. This has been effective, but closer to the chapel more extensive works are envisaged as the chapel floor is still liable to flooding. These essential repairs are likely to be ongoing. Work to repair the roof and secure the main door has also been achieved. We have had an internet campaign to draw attention to the island and the chapel. Our website has reached all over the world, and descendants of former Ensay residents have been in touch to approve our endeavours and to contribute to the history of the island. We have increased the number of enquiries about visitors wanting to attend the annual Pilgrimage, either as worshippers or as visitors to the island’s architectural or archaeological points of interest. We hope to develop this in future years. We have maintained the annual Pilgrimage with members of the Episcopalian Church community braving the sea elements to travel to Ensay to continue the tradition of maintaining the two communion services required each year in the 1930s disposition by Jesse Scott, a previous owner. We are grateful to former Bishops of Argyll and The Isles and to more local ministers who have led these services. We are grateful to the Diocesan administrators for their assistance in making this possible. We hope to extend this congregation of visitors in future years. We have received some donations towards the renovations, and we hope to create a wider pool of contributors. Visitors to the Pilgrimage have contributed to the boat charter required, and this has prevented running a loss on these events. What we can achieve on Ensay depends on funds and on volunteers who have in the past contributed their efforts and time so generously. We now need to open that up to a wider demographic. We have had constructive discussions with the Episcopalian Church about the charity taking on a more formal role in the custodianship of the building.
