The difficulty faced by Croatia, as for other parts of the former east, is the need to start from the ground up in building collections and forging institutions while also encouraging collectors, artists, and arts enthusiasts to support and engage with the arts. Focused on Bulgarian art, the Sofia Art Gallery was originally established in 1928 and opened in present location in 1977 with an additional space at 15 Yanko Sakazov Boulevard. This is the institu- tion with the highest commitment to contemporary art in Bulgaria, although the contemporary art department was only recently established in 2004.
