Czech Nonet to Premiere in San Diego

Czech Nonet to premiere in San Diego February 21, 1969 The San Diego premiere of the Czech Nonet, a string and woodwind ensemble, will be presented by the UCSD Committee for Arts and Lectures at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, February 28, in Sherwood Hall, La Jolla. The Czech Nonet is a unique ensemble with a unique coloration of sound. Four string and five wind instruments total the nine from which its name, the Nonet, is derived. The ensemble is composed of artists f rom the Czech Philharmonic and is the oldest of the Czech chamber ensembles as well as the most original in composition. It has been performing for the past 40 years, and it includes members of the original Nonet as well as new talents. The influence of the Czech Nonet is especially felt in Eastern Europe, where their unique ensemble has inspired compositions from the most notable contemporary writers of music. Burian, Dobias, Haba, Jaroch, Novak, Ridky, Martinu and Folprecht have each written especially for the Nonet. The nine members of the Nonet and their instruments are: Milan Vitek, violin; Milan Hermanek, viola; Rudolf Lojda, cello; Vaclav Fuka, double bass; Jiri Valek, flute; Karel Lang, oboe; Vaclav Kyzivat, clarinet; Jaroslav Rezac, bassoon; and Arnost Charvat, French horn. In addition to performing pieces for the nine instruments, the Nonet's structure makes possible a wide range of repertory for string and wind instruments in many combinations. The program in Sherwood Hall will include: "Nonet" by Martinu, "Nonet, Opus 45" by K. B. Jirak, "Quintet for oboe, clarinet, violin, viola and double bass, Opus 39" by Prokofiev and "Baletti a 9" by J. Novak. Reserved seating for the concert will be $3.00..
