|How to create your portfolio using GPC Creating a portfolio website with Google Pages Creator ( GPC ) Google Page Creator is a free tool that lets you create web pages right in your browser and publish them to the web with one click. There's no software to download and no web designer to hire. The pages you create are hosted on Google servers and are available at http://yoursitename.googlepages.com for the world to see. To use Google Page Creator, just visit http://pages.google.com and sign in with your Gmail address and password. If you don't yet have a Gmail address, create a one by clicking No Gmail Account? Sign up. Once you've signed in, you'll be able to create, design, and publish pages to your heart's content. 1 | Page |How to create your portfolio using GPC Here are the steps to create your portfolio using GPC. When you sign in to Page Creator for the first time you will be asked to agree the terms of use. After you click on the checkbox next to agree terms of use as shown below click on “I’m ready to create my pages”. When you first sign in to Page Creator, you automatically get a home page. Your home page is seen in page manager in edit mode as shown below. You can change the layout and look of your page by clicking on “change layout” on the top right corner. Once you are in the chose layout page, simply click on your preferred layout and it will be applied to your page and you will be back on the home page. 2 | Page |How to create your portfolio using GPC After you have selected the layout, you can select the look for your page by clicking on “Change look” on the top right corner of page editor. This will take you to a gallery of available looks. You can see full-size previews of different page looks by clicking on "Preview." When you've found the perfect look for your page, click on it and you're done. After you click on your preferred look from all the available page looks, it will be applied to your page as shown below. Use the tools on the left side of the page to: change the size and style of your text, create links, and insert images. Now is the time to start entering some information into your page. Start e entering content to your page by typing in the text boxes. 3 | Page |How to create your portfolio using GPC Linking to another page, file, or email address You can add a link by going to the Page Editor, selecting the text you want to link and clicking on the "Link" button. If you want to link to one of your own pages... select "Your pages," then click on the desired page or create a new page by entering its title into the "Create new page" box and clicking "Add Page." If you want to link to a file... select "Your files" and choose a previously uploaded one, or upload a file from your computer by clicking "Browse," choosing a file, and clicking on the "Add file" button. 4 | Page |How to create your portfolio using GPC If you want to link to a page outside of your site... select "Web address" and fill in the specific address of the page you'd like to link to. If you want to link to an email address... Select "Email address" and fill in the specific email address you'd like to link to. Once you've created your link, click "Ok." If you want to test your links, simply click "Preview" at the top of the page. Inserting an image into your page Click the "Image" button on the right of the Page Editor page. The "Add Image" dialog box will appear and let you can choose an image from two sources: "Your Images" displays previously uploaded images and lets you upload a new image from your computer. 5 | Page |How to create your portfolio using GPC "The Web" lets you enter the web address of an image you'd like to use. Once you've selected the image you want to insert, click "Add image" and – voila! Your image has been inserted. Remember that using others' images on the web without their permission may be bad manners, or worse, copyright infringement. For more information on using images from the web on your page, visit the Google Page Creator help center. Once you've finished editing your page, click the Publish button at the top of the page. If you only wants to preview how you page will look without publishing it , simply click on preview link next to publish button. Simply click on the “back to site manager” link on top left corner. Once you are in the Site Manager, click on the page you wish to add / change content. It will open in page editor and you can change/add contents as you did for the first page. Publish your page/ Website You have a few options. If you'd like to publish your whole site at once, click the "Publish all changes" link on the right hand side of the Page Manager (if you don't see that link, it means all your pages have been already published). If you just want to publish just some of your pages, select individual pages using the checkboxes in the Page Manager, then click "Publish." 7 | Page |How to create your portfolio using GPC Unpublish your pages If you want to unpublish any given page, simply go to the Page Manager, select the pages you want to take offline by clicking their checkboxes, and select "Unpublish" from the "More Actions..." dropdown menu. View my pages You can view a page in two ways. While in page edit click “preview” on top left hand corner to preview page even if it’s not published. When you are in site manager click on the “view on the web” while in grid layout and while in List view click on “Web address (URL)” for the page you want to preview. If you wish to see the entire site starting from your home page you, go to site manager and click on the Web address (URL) of your site located on top of the page. 8 | Page |How to create your portfolio using GPC Changing site settings If you wish to make changes to your site settings you can go to settings by clicking on the “site settings” on top left corner of while in site manager. Once you are inside site settings you can select a different page as your home page , change the title on your page , hide your site etc. To go back to the site manager click on back to site manager link on top and bottom of settings page. Share your Website URL with someone If you want to tell your friends about your new site, go to the Page Manager, select your home page by clicking on the checkbox, and select "Tell your friends" from the "More Actions..." dropdown menu. 9 | Page |How to create your portfolio using GPC Frequently Asked Questions 1. Are there any space restrictions? Yes. You can use up to 100MB of space for your pages and uploaded files. 2. How do I create another site? Select the "Create a site with a different address" link that appears near the top of the Page Manager. 3. What's the difference between a page and a site? A site is a collection of pages that you can access using a URL like http://yoursitename.googlepages.com. A page (for example, named "myferret") is a single document that lives on your site with its own unique web address (in this case, http://yoursitename.googlepages.com/myferret). A "page" is like a page in a book, while a "site" is like the entire book; every page belongs to a site, and a site can contain as many pages as you'd like. 4. Why can't I see my pages on the web? Probably because they aren't there yet. Your pages aren't published until you hit the "Publish" button, either from the Page Manager or from the Page Editor. 5. What if I have all the pages for my portfolio already created using another tool? You can still use those existing pages in GPC by uploading the pages and other resources for them. But one thing you must keep in mind in that all your pages and images and other files should be in a single folder and you must upload all of them one at a time. Once you have all the existing files you need to create a home page for your portfolio using GPC and link to your existing pages from there. 6. Can I edit HTML? Absolutely.
