THE WAY October 2020 EDITION WROXALL’S PARISH MAGAZINE Produced and financed by Wroxall Parish Council 1 Dear Residents, The Parish council met again by Zoom as we are still waiting until we can begin meeting face to face once more. Please look out for details of how you can join the meeting on the 2nd Monday every month at 7 p.m, on the monthly parish council agenda displayed on the village Notice Board or on our website www.wroxallparishcouncil.org.uk At this month’s meeting we co-opted Kai Wacker, a local resident, who has filled the vacancy on the Parish Council. Welcome to Kai! Speeding through the village is a big concern, but I am pleased to report that the parish council have been successful in getting the IW Council to paint 30 mph roundels on the road. As there are street lights in the centre of the village these will be on the approaches at each end of the village. Talks are continuing regarding a pelican crossing upgrade to the zebra crossing. If successful this would slow the traffic in the centre of the village. The lease transferring the recreation ground from the IW Council to the Parish Council is proceeding and will be concluded soon. Hopefully the existing Covid lockdown rules will not have to be upgraded on the Island as long as everyone respects the rules. Please stay safe Kind regards, Adrian Gallop, Chairman, Wroxall Parish Council WROXALL METHODIST CHURCH NOTICE Wroxall Methodist Church is going to recommence its worship in the building on the 1st November at 10.30. The swallows have also migrated. The beginning of October started with storm Alex which produced high winds and an exceptional amount of rain. This has brought the leaves down and loose branches down before a lot of tress have had chance to change into their autumn colours. Feels like winter has come early but let’s hope we see a dryer spell of weather before we are in to dark evenings when the clocks go back an hour at midnight on the 25th October. The local farmers who grow wheat and barley have been busy sowing the winter crops. We still have a great crop of tomatoes in the greenhouse and the cucumbers are growing down from the roof. 6 Award winning gardener offers a range of garden IF YOU WANT TO - work. reduce stress -improve Garden design/re-design Need help with your posture -ease back pain - garden….? I wanted to talk quickly about the challenges of forecasting for the Island. Back in the early days when we were Wroxall Weather, we only had a couple of stations just covering Wroxall. Now we have dozens of high-tech stations all across the Island. These stations record all meteorological data and send it back here where it is processed then fed in to our forecast computer. This data, mixed with regional and national data such as the GFS models help to produce the daily forecasts we release on the website and social media. The topographical layout of the Island and its geographical position is our greatest forecasting headache. Ventnor can have heavy rain, while Godshill is sunny. The start of the month we saw heavy rainfall totals, mostly thanks to storm systems coming in from the Atlantic. The mid-range forecast is hinting at mostly settled weather through the rest of the month. Daytime temperatures are now dropping off rapidly as we lose the daytime heating. This will be even more noticeable towards the end of the month when we “roll the clocks back” in the early hours of the 26th. We lose an extra hour of heating and the winter temperatures really set in. The all-important ghosts and ghouls forecast for old hallows Eve (Halloween), is dry but cold. Take care if out and about that night, respect and enjoy and don’t forget to check the “Trick or Treat” forecast on the website.
