THE WAY October 2020 EDITION

WROXALL’S PARISH MAGAZINE

Produced and financed by Wroxall Parish Council 1

Dear Residents,

The Parish council met again by Zoom as we are still waiting until we can begin meeting face to face once more. Please look out for details of how you can join the meeting on the 2nd Monday every month at 7 p.m, on the monthly parish council agenda displayed on the village Notice Board or on our website www.wroxallparishcouncil.org.uk At this month’s meeting we co-opted Kai Wacker, a local resident, who has filled the vacancy on the Parish Council. Welcome to Kai!

Speeding through the village is a big concern, but I am pleased to report that the parish council have been successful in getting the IW Council to paint 30 mph roundels on the road. As there are street lights in the centre of the village these will be on the approaches at each end of the village. Talks are continuing regarding a pelican crossing upgrade to the zebra crossing. If successful this would slow the traffic in the centre of the village.

The lease transferring the recreation ground from the IW Council to the Parish Council is proceeding and will be concluded soon. Hopefully the existing Covid lockdown rules will not have to be upgraded on the Island as long as everyone respects the rules. Please stay safe Kind regards, Adrian Gallop, Chairman, Wroxall Parish Council

Country watch with Jackie Gallop

I recently saw a Charm of goldfinches together in Wroxall ready to migrate. The swallows have also migrated.

The beginning of October started with storm Alex which produced high winds and an exceptional amount of rain. This has brought the leaves down and loose branches down before a lot of tress have had chance to change into their autumn colours. Feels like winter has come early but let’s hope we see a dryer spell of weather before we are in to dark evenings when the clocks go back an hour at midnight on the 25th October. The local farmers who grow wheat and barley have been busy sowing the winter crops.

We still have a great crop of tomatoes in the greenhouse and the cucumbers are growing down from the roof.

Good day Wroxall from your weather centre. I wanted to talk quickly about the challenges of forecasting for the Island. Back in the early days when we were Wroxall Weather, we only had a couple of stations just covering Wroxall. Now we have dozens of high-tech stations all across the Island. These stations record all meteorological data and send it back here where it is processed then fed in to our forecast computer.

This data, mixed with regional and national data such as the GFS models help to produce the daily forecasts we release on the website and social media. The topographical layout of the Island and its geographical position is our greatest forecasting headache. Ventnor can have heavy rain, while Godshill is sunny. The start of the month we saw heavy rainfall totals, mostly thanks to storm systems coming in from the Atlantic. The mid-range forecast is hinting at mostly settled weather through the rest of the month. Daytime temperatures are now dropping off rapidly as we lose the daytime heating. This will be even more noticeable towards the end of the month when we “roll the clocks back” in the early hours of the 26th. We lose an extra hour of heating and the winter temperatures really set in.

The all-important ghosts and ghouls forecast for old hallows Eve (Halloween), is dry but cold. Take care if out and about that night, respect and enjoy and don’t forget to check the “Trick or Treat” forecast on the website.

For daily local updates please visit the weather centres website here: iwweather.org.uk You can also find us on social media, just search for IOW Weather Centre. Christmas advertising space is now available.

Until next time Wroxall, stay weather safe, get those chimneys swept, heating systems checked and take care of each other.

Musings from the Manse The seasons are moving on, the leaves on the trees really are turning now. The light through the trees is very beautiful. It is amazing to slow down and really look at the colours around us, to listen to the sounds around us, there is also the smell of Autumn, of bonfires and woodfires in homes. We know that the changing of the clocks is coming and the darker evenings. In all that is going on around us it can seem that we are moving into a darker time. Some of the festivals of this time seem to almost want to celebrate the dark, though there is a part of me that also wonders if what happens is that as we face those fears we realise that the light is stronger. Lighting a candle can be part of the remembrance that comes with All Saints and All Souls day. This lighting of candles is a reminder of the one who came as the Light of the World. We need to wait a little longer before we get to that festival when we celebrate the coming of Jesus into the World. Yet in this time as we are going into the darker seasons we do need to look to the light and to the hope that is offered. One of the ways that we can do that is be continuing to support and care for each other through this time. Sometimes it can be as simple as smiling at people as we pass them in the street. Living in a part of the world that has very clear seasons can be a reminder that this challenging season will pass, we know there is hope, new life will come. 13 God Bless, Rev. Helen Millward MEMORIES………………. MEMORIES

Wroxall Mini Bus Association The mini bus committee would like to say a big thank you to all the patrons of the Wroxall Mini Bus for their continued support again this year especially as we had to make a slight change to the arrangement when calling on them due to the Covid Pandemic. Although the mini bus has been affected like so many other voluntary and charitable organisations we have, whilst following the necessary guidelines been able to continue providing transport for those in the village who have needed

to attend hospital appointments, clinics and doctors’ surgeries. I hope we can soon return to some normality but in the meantime keep safe. Regards Malcolm Hood

St. John's Church Services for November 1st November Holy Communion “Saints and Souls" 10am. 8th November Holy Communion Remembrance 10am. 15th November Holy Communion 10am. 24th November Holy Communion (BCP) 9.45am. 29th November Sunday United Service at St. George’s, Arreton at 11.15am. The Annual Church Meeting will be held on Sunday,18th October at 11.15am. Notices of services are also on the church noticeboard. Remembrance Sunday There will be no outside service due to Covid, however if you would like to lay a at the you can do this privately either on Sunday 8th November or on the 11th November. Remembering I expect you, like me, are struggling at times to keep up with the ever-changing rules and regulations surrounding Covid 19. The good news is that your local church of St Johns has now been up and running again since the middle of July. I must pay tribute to the fantastic church family who have helped make this happen, especially the churchwarden and members of the PCC (church council). There have, as you can imagine, been so many regulations for us to adhere to and risk assessments to be completed, but we are now back in a rhythm of worship that we have all missed so much. It is certainly different now as for one thing we cannot have congregational singing, but we can have music played on the organ or sung by a single (well distanced) voice! One thing I want to do is give assurance that St Johns is ‘Covid safe’ and as such all are welcome to our services. We are not restricted by the rule of 6, but by the number we can safely seat, which is sadly fewer than we would like; but necessary for us all to be safe. Currently we can safely seat only 24. Which brings me to this special time of year as we approach Remembrance tide. For us in church this time begins at the beginning of November when we Celebrate, ‘All Saints’ on 1st November and ‘All Souls’ on the 2nd. This year All Saints Day falls on a Sunday so at St Johns we will have a special service at 10am where we will celebrate both! This is an important time when we remember not only those well-known Christian Saints, but also those less familiar ones, the saints in our own lives. Those we have loved and lost; family members and friends who have died and we miss so much. There will be an opportunity during the service to remember them by name and I will light candles as a sign of remembrance. In normal times this would be an occasion when each person that attended could light a candle but with the restrictions, we are having to do things differently. If you would like a loved one remembered, or you can’t come to the service please drop a note through the vestry door. On Remembrance Sunday, the following week, the 8th November, again we are having to do things differently this year but there will be a service at St Johns at 10am. Sadly, the usual gathering at the war memorial will not be possible due to the rules governing outside gatherings and social distancing. It will mean that many of you may not be able to attend as you have in the past so if that is the case please pause at 11am and remember as we will remember them. God Bless Kath x 17

IW Councillor Rodney Downer Dear Residents, In an effort to reduce speeding in the village the Parish Council put in a request to Island Roads for roundels to be painted on the road at either end of the village stating 30mph. I happily endorsed the request and the Isle of Wight Council have now approved this and are instructing Island Roads to carry out the work. Let’s hope it slows the speeders down! The steps up to the old railway line are in the process of being repaired with a better step at the bottom down to the road making it not so steep. A request has been put in to have the railway line swept as there are a lot of leaves around. Stenbury View has also been swept after concerns were raised by residents. Road sweeping is on a six-week programme, but if there are concerns, I will request additional sweeping. Thank you to the resident who informed Island Roads about the fallen tree along the old railway line. A large pothole has been reported in Clarence Road. A resident reported fly tipping on the road up to Stenbury down this has been passed to the Councils waste team. Following last month’s article in the Way, about scams and cold calling, I have received a number of requests for “no cold calling” stickers. If you need any please give me a call. Please do not hesitate to contact me on 854203 or [email protected] Stay safe in these difficult times Kind regards, Rodney Downer, IWC Ward Councillor

Mystery Bagpipes

Did you hear bagpipes in the village recently? David McLeeman, who lives in Yorkshire, was staying at Appuldurcombe and was playing his bagpipes in the field leading up to Freemantle Gates. When we went up to see him, he was not playing for long because it was very cold and his fingers were freezing!! With his permission I took a picture of him and his bagpipes.
