When Golf SA amalgamated in 2009 the events were combined to be played concurrently. The events include a stroke component with the leading qualifiers being awarded the SA Medal (men) & Vesta Cup (women). The winners of the match play component are declared the SA Amateur Champions. The SA Men’s Amateur Championship has an unbroken history dating back to the inception of the South Australian Golf Association (SAGA) in 1905. Records indicate that the Amateur Championship was played from 1900-1904, although not under the auspice of SAGA. The SA Women’s Amateur Championship dates to 1902 when it was played as the Ladies’ State Championship. It was conducted under the auspices of SAGA from 1905 to 1929 when the South Australian Ladies Golf Union (SALGU) was formed as a separate entity. The Rene Erichsen Salver (women) began in 1967 with the inaugural winner being Rhonda Watson. In 2009 the men’s event was renamed to the Golf SA Classic and was played in conjunction with the Rene Erichsen Salver – the first event of its kind to be played concurrently. The men’s trophy is named after John Crosby. John Crosby and Rhonda Watson were both inducted into the South Australian Golf Hall of Fame in 2011.
