The mother tongue figures were compiled and grouped under the relevant language for presentation of final table. In this publication the information is presented at the districtltehsil and town level for the state. Table C-7 has been divided in two parts - the first part is table C-7 (Part-A) in which all the scheduled language along with the mother tongues grouped under each language are presented at state/districtltehsil and town level. In second part table C-7 (Part-B) all those non-scheduled languages along with the mother tongues grouped under each languages is presented at state/districtJtehsil and town level. The Table C-7 - Language presented in this volume comes under part IV B (i) Social and Cultural Tables and gives the data down to tehsil/town level for Madhya Pradesh state. The presentation of the 1991 language data is based on the same principles as were adopted in the 1971, 1981 data. Besides, the figures in respect of individual mother tongues have also been presented now. In this volume Table C-7 - language which gives the distribution by sex and by rural and urban residence were initially compiled at the Regional Tabulation Offices established to undertake the manual processing of the Census Schedules and for attending to few basic compilations on full count basis and further processing of the returns and preparation of the table were undertaken in this Directors under the able guidance of the Registrar General, India. Where pluri lingual and pluri culture . On the basis of above fact and the ethnic and linguistic composition of o.ur country two language questions were asked in 1991 Census one of them is" Mother tongue" and another is two other Languages known. These two questions along with other questions canvassed in each state and union territory equally. Question six (6) regarding Mother tongue and Question seven (7) in respect of Two Other Language known by the individual were canvassed to facilitate the preparation of the C-7 table on full count basis manually from the Household Schedules, the item "Mother Tongue" was copied from the Individual Slips in the column ofthe Household Schedules. The respondent as the instructions to the enumerator would show, was made to feel to return the name of his Mother 10ngue in reply to question 6 of the schedule and the same was recorded faithfully, by the enumerator. This volume having mainly part A (1), C-7 Part A (ii) and C-7 Part B(i) and Part B(ii). Part A scheduled languages comprising of 18 languages and Part B Non-Scheduled languages comprising of 4S languages and the remaining "Total of other languages" Consequent upon the passing of the 71 st Amendment Act 1992 to the Constitution of India and in pursuance of Government of India Notification No. 55 dated 1.9.1992 three languages viz Konkani Manipuri, and Nepali were added to the list of eighteen scheduled languages. Part A distribution of the 18 languages specified in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India (Inclusive of languageslMother tongues grouped under each) Part B gives the speakers of the 45 languages not specified in the eighth schedule (Non-Scheduled languages) and the Mother Tongues included under each language. All other languages and Mother tongue falling under Part B and which returned less than 10,000 speakers each at the all India level other than those not identifiable on the basis of linguistic information available with us to date and included in the category 'others' occurring as the last entry in part B. 4. The number of Mother Tongue which returned 10,000 or more speakers at the all India level have been grouped under the languages in Part A and B have been listed out in the fly leaf Category 'others' included in each language all which returned less than 10,000 speakers each. 5. As adopted in 1971 and 1981 Census the presentation of data of 1991 Census is based on same principles in addition the speaker strength figures of all individual Mother tongue returned by 10,000 or more have also been given. The fly leaf proceedings the main table explains all such details. 6.
