This 2007 Ford F-350 was placed in service today at Station 9. It will service as the primary vehicle for Car 198. The new unit is equipped with a four-person cab, a camper shell, and a slide-out equipment/compartment tray. It was photographed at this morning's house fire on The Circle. Are they gonna letter it anymore than it is? I can see the little emblem and the light bar, but is that all? Beach - 01/01/08 - 20:48 They still keeping the van? Jimmy - 01/04/08 - 07:18 There are no plans to letter the vehicle any further. Unlike most of the fire department vehicles, the intend is to NOT be flashy with decals and striping. The reasoning behind this is prevent suspects or witnesses from fleeing a fire scene upon the arrival of an investigator. This is similar to why police detectives and ATF arson investigators utilize unmarked vehicles. The van has been gutted and will probably be used by Services. Hahahahaha…... Silver - 01/04/08 - 11:21 And a big red light bar on top….very discreet [MTH] - 01/04/08 - 13:16 MTH, you are missing the point…it is not about being discreet. There would already be many fire trucks on the scene whenever an investigator arrives, so being discreet would be out of the question. The intent is to merely avoid advertising the arrival of investigators in hopes of not running off any potential witnesses. The only reason the lighting was installed was to provide investigators the ability to respond in a timely manner. Have you ever tried to go from Station 20 to Station 28 at 5pm? RFD574 - 01/04/08 - 14:11 Acutally, I used to run light bars on my vehicles from the time I became a fireman in 1980 up until 1999 and then I found that the effectiveness of disguised strobes and leds worked just as well when placed correctly. I drive a similar vehicle to the one pictured and as those that know we will attest, I can go anywhere I need to go and the public is well aware of my presence. Besides, I was not faulting the lack of lettering, my point simply was the with the bar light on, it is pretty much identifiable as a fire department vehicle anyways although I agree I probably would not plaster INVESTIGATIONS down the side….sort of like my unmarked Crown Vic…blackwalls and a couple antennas…...ah…..........yep me thinks its a police car….....bingo…. MTH (Email) - 01/04/08 - 23:57 MTH, I find your knowledge about emergency response interesting and I disagree. I have been involved in the selection of emergency equipment on our vehicles for about eight years now. As you say those that KNOW will attest our vehicles are equipped properly for there use and response. RFD457 (Email) - 01/06/08 - 21:26 Great thing about this country, everyone can express their opinions and they all do not necessarily need to be the same. [MTH] - 01/07/08 - 09:33 The van that previously served as Car 198 has been assigned to Station 8, for transporting the personnel of Engine 8, when they respond to haz-mat incidents as part of the regional response team. Oregon Hill Volunteer Fire Department member Paul Lewis Ellington, 36, died this morning while answering a call for a trailer fire, when his personal vehicle ran off the road. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. WFMY- TV also has details. The accident occurred on Crutchfield Road near Business 29 northeast of Reidsville. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Ellington Family. Lets all PLEASE learn from this and drive careful and wear seatbelts, even in back of an Engine company. Be Safe. Apex Batt Chief - 01/04/08 - 22:59 The same thing I posted on The Watch Desk. No judgements on anyone, just my observations over the years. “Several items in the news (local, state, and national) related to driving that have involved emergency services folks. This stuff is totally preventable- totally. To my firefighting brethren out there- slow down. It is not your fault the world is combustible. For my EMS brothers and sisters- slow down. Speed is not a medical treatment at anytime. If it’s their time, then it’s their time. And for my law enforcing cousins out there- slow down. You can’t catch the bad guys from the back of my ambulance. Be safe. Be careful. Slow down. And buckle-up.
