GB Pergolesi (1710-1736) HYMN | NEH 417 O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home; Under the shadow of thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is thine arm alone, And our defence is sure. Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame, From everlasting thou art God, To endless years the same. A thousand ages in thy sight Are like an evening gone, Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun. | !3 Time, like an ever-rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day. O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Be thou our guard while troubles last, And our eternal home. The invocation is said by the Presider. Priest +Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All Blessed be God’s Kingdom now and for ever. Priest The Lord be with you. All And also with you. The Presider welcomes the people and introduces the Mass. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Minister God has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of his glory in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. As we acknowledge our human frailty, we call to mind our sins of word, deed and omission, and confess them before God our Father. Silence All Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. !4 | (Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy) The Presider pronounces God’s forgiveness. Priest Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: +pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen. COLLECT The Presider says the prayer of the day. Priest Everlasting God, our maker and redeemer, grant us, with all the faithful departed, the sure benefits of your Son’s saving passion and glorious resurrection, that, in the last day, when you gather up all things in Christ, we may with them enjoy the fullness of your promises; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen. | !5 MINISTRY OF THE WORD The people sit for the first reading from scripture. FIRST READING | JOB 14.1-14 ‘A mortal, born of woman, few of days and full of trouble, comes up like a flower and withers, flees like a shadow and does not last. Do you fix your eyes on such a one? Do you bring me into judgement with you? Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? No one can. Since their days are determined, and the number of their months is known to you, and you have appointed the bounds that they cannot pass, look away from them, and desist, that they may enjoy, like labourers, their days. ‘For there is hope for a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its shoots will not cease. Though its root grows old in the earth, and its stump dies in the ground, yet at the scent of water it will bud and put forth branches like a young plant. But mortals die, and are laid low; humans expire, and where are they? As waters fail from a lake, and a river wastes away and dries up, so mortals lie down and do not rise again; until the heavens are no more, they will not awake or be roused out of their sleep. O that you would hide me in Sheol, that you would conceal me until your wrath is past, that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me! If mortals die, will they live again? All the days of my service I would wait until my release should come. Reader For the Word of the Lord, All thanks be to God. GRADUAL HYMN | NEH 459 The Lord's my shepherd, I'll not want; He makes me down to lie In pastures green; he leadeth me The quiet waters by. !6 | My soul he doth restore again, And me to walk doth make Within the paths of righteousness, E'en for his own name's sake. Yea, though I walk through death's dark vale, Yet will I fear none ill: For thou art with me, and thy rod And staff me comfort still. My table thou hast furnishèd In presence of my foes; My head thou dost with oil anoint, And my cup overflows. Goodness and mercy all my life Shall surely follow me; And in God's house for evermore My dwelling-place shall be. GOSPEL | JOHN 5.19-29 The people remain standing while the appointed minister proclaims the Gospel. Minister Alleluia, alleluia. ‘It is the will of him who sent me,’ says the Lord, ‘that I should lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up on the last day.’ Minister The Lord be with you All and also with you. Minister The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. All +Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise. The Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing; and he will show him greater works than these, so that you will be astonished. Indeed, just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whomsoever | !7 he wishes. The Father judges no one but has given all judgement to the Son, so that all may honour the Son just as they honour the Father. Anyone who does not honour the Son does not honour the Father who sent him. Very truly, I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come under judgement, but has passed from death to life. ‘Very truly, I tell you, the hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For just as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself; and he has given him authority to execute judgement, because he is the Son of Man. Do not be astonished at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and will come out—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.
