Volume 31Page Issue 2 December 2016 - Kislev 5776 The Shaliach The Shaliach News and Views from the Young Israel of Plainview F ROM THE R ABBI’ S S TUDY Lighting Chanuka Candles When I’m Out for Dinner R. Sheshet said: “A lodger is obligated in ner Chanuka.” R. Zeira said: “At first, when I would visit the house of Rav, I would share the costs with the host. After I was married, I concluded that now I certainly don’t need [to light], as [she] is light- ing for me at my home…” (T. Shabbat 23a) INSIDE THIS ISSUE: From the above Talmudic discussion we learn two important Halachot about traveling on Chanuka. The first that a guest may participate in the lighting of his hosts. The second is that another may light for someone in his home. But what Rabbi’s Study 1 happens when I am out during the time to light candles and won’t return until late? Certainly if a family member is in the house, I can count on them to light at the Committee Directory 2 proper time. What if my house is empty? Would it be preferable for me to light with hosts or wait until I arrive home? President’s Pen 3 The simple answer is that, based on the Talmud, Chanuka Candles are a require- ment for the house, and therefore I cannot light where I am eating. This is the po- MALI 5 sition of the R. Yaakov ben Asher who concludes (Tur 677) that a home is defined by where you sleep. So it would be better to light when you get home, even if it’s late. R. Moshe Issurles in his commentary on the Tur notes that some disagree and Life Cycle 7 hold that you should light at the right time where you are eating, even if you will Announcements be sleeping somewhere else. Kiddush/Shul Calen- The argument seems to be based on definition of dwelling. Is our “home” for 9 dar Chanuka candles defined by where we eat or where we sleep. Another ramification to this question would be students in a dorm or someone staying in a hotel. Should they light in the dining room where they eat or where they sleep. In Yeshiva, R. Aharon Lichtenstein zt”l poskened that we light in our dorm lobbies (we couldn’t light in our rooms for safety concerns). Nevertheless, R. Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (quoted in Mikraei Kodesh p. 100, n. 101) allowed stu- dents to light in either their dorm lobby or the cafeteria. Ideally, one should light where one sleeps. However, if one will be arriving very late and there is opportunity to light where you are eating, you may do so. Remember, if you are eating before you light, you need to put some reminder in place to ensure that you will not forget. This can be fulfilled by asking a friend to remind you or even setting an alarm on your phone.
