REGISTER OF ENTERTAINERS, ACTORS AND OTHERS WHO HAVE PERFORMED IN APARTHEID SOUTH AFRICA SINCE JANUARY 1981 ...... 2 Annex. DELETIONS FROM THE REGISTER ........................... 21 INTRODUCTION The Cultural Boycott of South Africa is an integral component of a broad international effort to help eradicate apartheid through peaceful means. Its purpose is to isolate the South African rigime from the world of international culture and is achieved by persuading artists and entertainers to sever professional contacts with that country until apartheid is abolished. The present Register of entertainers, actors and others who have performed in South Africa is part of the international campaign for a cultural boycott which the General Assembly of the United Nations has repeatedly recommended over the years in a number of resolutions. The present Register is published within the ambit of General Assembly resolution 42/23 G of 20 November 1987 on concerted international action for the eradication of apartheid. The four previous issues of the Register were published in 1983, 1984, 1986 and 1987. The Register contains the names of those artists and entertainers who have performed in South Africa from January 1981 to March 1988, as well as a list of persons whose names have been deleted since the publication of the last Register in April 1987. Deletions from the Register are made by the United Nations Special Committee against Apartheid upon receipt of letters from persons included in the list informing the Committee that they do not intend to engage in cultural activities in South Africa as long as the apartheid system exists. Resolution 42/23 G and the earlier resolutions of the General Assembly also contain appeals to all Governments and organizations to take appropriate action for the cessation of all cultural, scientific and sports relations that would support the apartheid r6qime of South Africa as well as relations with individuals, institutions and other bodies endorsing apartheid. In this connection, the Register assists Governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations and individuals to implement the cultural boycott of South Africa and to dissuade artists and entertainers from engaging in any cultural or other activities in South Africa. For example, in the light of the mounting repression in South Africa an increasing number of Governments no longer permit persons whose names appear on the Register to perform in their countries or in some cases even receive visas, and many national or private broadcasting corporations also do not broadcast their music or show their films. The Special Committee gratefully acknowledges the contributions of all who have adhered strictly to the cultural boycott by refusing to perform in South Africa, often foregoing lucrative offers, who have dissuaded some of their colleagues from performing there, or who have criticized entertainers who have performed in that country. At the same time, it appeals to all Governments and others to renew their efforts to implement the boycott and to give widest publicity to the Register, and especially calls in this regard on those states whose nationals appear on the list in relatively large numbers. The Special Committee believes that artists and entertainers, representing a most sensitive and freedom loving part of humankind, are capable, by their example, to exert an important influence on public opinion and can contribute positively to world action against apartheid. It therefore appeals to all entertainers, artists and other members of the world of culture to express their opposition to apartheid by refusing to engage in any cultural or related activity in South Africa as long as that abhorrent system is in effect.
