I am Secretary of the American Conference of Cantors - an officer now, after having served on the ACC board for four years. It has been an honor and privilege to be in the forefront of our movements cantorial leadership. Not only do I attend conferences and meetings working on behalf of the ACC and the UAHC, but I represent our Temple. In June of 2001, our national ACC convention will held here in the DC area. I feel fortunate to have been ap- pointed co-chair of this convention, which will bring to our area 350 cantors, music directors, choir directors, organists, etc. Youll hear more about this event as it gets closer. In my position as an officer of the ACC, I also need to respond to areas of-concern for the Cantorate as a whole. A recent article published in Moment magazine - mostly about the chang- ing role of rabbis - also featured a side-bar article on cantors. The article, although correct in its general notion that synagogue music has changed over the years, did little to promote the Cantorate; rather, it suggested that cantors today are not trained adequately to meet the needs of congregations that want to "hold hands and sway" to the music. It claimed our Cantorial School is turning out "dysfunctional cantors." I must say that I feel very positively about the way our congregation has embraced me and the cantorial leadership that I have brought to TRS. We are singing together and praying to spiritual music together. Through my High Holy Day sermons you have learned the importance of being open to new and old music of our Jewish heritage. You have embraced both the participatory • music and the beautiful choral music. It is too bad that the author of this article has not experienced a worship service at Temple Rodef Shalom. I think if she had, she might have reported that our Cantorial School is indeed training cantors who are meeting the diverse needs of congregations. Id encourage you to read the article in the December issue of Moment and respond with your thoughts to the editors and/or me. Temple Emanuel of Baltimore to Come to TRS Koleinu, Cantor Shochet and Rabbi Schwartzman are gearing up for what will be two wonderful Shabbat services featuring the combined teams of TRS and Temple Emanuel of Baltimore. Cantor Shochet is returning to his home congregation in Baltimore to participate in a service featuring the combined choirs of Koleinu and Temple Emanuel on Friday, January 28. Rabbi Schwartzman will also participate and deliver the sermon at that Shabbat service. On Friday, February 11, the Temple Emanuel choir, along with its student cantor, will join Koleinu and our clergy at TRS. At that time, we welcome Rabbi Gustav Buchdahl (Cantor Shochets childhood rabbi and classmate of Rabbi Berkowits) who will deliver the sermon for our congregation. This is a wonderful time to join Koleinu and learn new music for these two services. Rehearsals are Tuesday nights in January 0/4, 11, 18 and 25). All are welcome! OOPS!!
