Th e mine is about 5,000 feet above sea level, Tailings Remediation and in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest’s Siskiyou Mountains Site Restoration Ranger District. Rogue River, Oregon Th e hard-rock mine was named for the characteristic blue sheen of weathered chalcopyrite, the copper ore that miners took out of the Joe Creek drainage. Th e tailings are from the estimated 12,000 feet of adits SUMMARY and shafts miners dug into the mountain early in the 20th century. ERRG was tasked to restore the site where waste rock from the mine has been leaching toxic material into surface waters for over 100 years. Owner Sulfuric acid, arsenic, lead, U.S. Forest Service cadmium, copper and zinc have been leaching into the Location Applegate River watershed, Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, Oregon impacting water quality in Joe Creek and the lower Elliott Award Date Creek watershed in violation of July 2010 the federal Clean Water Act. Th e project includes removing Actual or Completion Date 66,500 cy of toxic waste or Projected Completion Date material on the site, reclaiming July 2013 the site, installing erosion Award Amount control, and pH treatment structures, replacing topsoil and restoring $10.9 million native vegetation by growing 10,000 native plants. Access, terrain and logistics make this a challenging and complex Final Contract Price project. ERRG trucks navigated the roughly 1,000 vertical feet of the $14.9 million site on up to 35% haul roads to carve a huge bowl out of the earth and create a lined and capped repository for the toxic tailings. ERRG Services Provided HazMat Remediation fabricated and installed 10 adit gates and closed 1 adit and a vertical Road Construction shaft with polyurethane foam techniques (PUF). Over 50,000 pounds Excavation of steel and reclamation supplies were fl own by helicopter to the Transportation of Toxic Substances mine locations. Erosion Control Th ree Spider excavators were also utilized to crawl up the steep slopes Restoring Vegetation of four pile tailings stretching down the mountain’s southwest side. Operations and Maintenance Th e tailings are pulled down to where they can be handled with bigger Remote Extremely Steep, Rocky Terrain equipment. A stout cable is attached to the Spider to anchor it to the Repository Design mountain against a 76% slope. Hand laborers using climbing gear clean up tailings that cannot be reached with the Spider. ERRG will perform maintenance of the erosion control structures and monitor the project’s vegetation reclamation and aquatic environment for
