RSS 2.0 Makes Podcasting Work “Really Simple Syndication” RSS 2.0 added the link to audio or video media “Subscribing” is usually FREE DIY Podcasting: Benefits for Teaching & Learning !17 One of the most important pieces of Web 2.0 technology involves the syndication of website content. Specifically, RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a standardized protocol which makes a portion of a web site (web feed) available to individual subscribers[1]. Earlier versions of RSS contributed to the rise of blogs. RSS 2.0 introduced the concept of an “enclosure,” a link to another file – an mp3 audio file in the case of podcasts. Web feeds allow users to capture each new episode on the site using an “aggregator” or “podcatcher.” RSS 1.0 led to rise of BLOGS, i.e., “web logs” RSS 2.0 allows an “enclosure”, a link to another file, e.g., and mp3 audio file RSS (Really Simple Syndication) 2.0 is a Web 2.0 technology that allows website syndication Allows portion of website, called a “web feed”, to be available to individual subscribers “Subscribing” doesn’t imply cost; most are free [1] Here, subscribing refers to the technology of obtaining the content, not the cost. Most podcasts today are free and don’t require a payment to subscribe. Podcasting – Everyone is doing it Bloggers Amateurs Broadcasters Radio shows NPR “In the Media” YOU! Education institutions of all sorts are beginning to make course content available as podcasts. Professional broadcasters and syndicated radio shows are now making their content available as podcasts. NPR’s “In the Media” was one of the first to appear. Apple was late to the game but gave podcasting a big boost about a year ago when they began to add podcasts to their iTunes music store directory. Now a search on iTunes lists almost 5,000 educational podcasts.
