These events in turn help to raise Scotland’s profile as the perfect stage for events on the global stage. The Mountain Bike World Cup was one of the first events to be funded by EventScotland, and now in its 15th year of support, it demonstrates exactly what this funding programme was designed for. The Mountain Bike World Cup is a multi-award winning event with 31 domestic and international awards so far. In 2018, 22,000 watched the event and 274 riders from 24 nations competed. The 2018 World Cup delivered almost £3.5 million of economic impact to Lochaber and Scotland, and since 2002 the overall economic impact has exceeded £40 million. Other globally-renowned events such as Glasgow International, Edinburgh Art Festival, World Pipe Band Championships, Piping Live!, Royal National Mòd and Skyrunning World Championships, also formed part of this year’s programme, alongside newly supported and one-off events including: PROCESSIONS, 3D Festival, Special Olympics GB 40th Anniversary Games, and Cricket Scotland International Fixtures. In total 30 events were funded through this programme. Each of these showcase events contributes strongly to the national events and tourism strategies by bolstering economic, social and media impacts, while enhancing Scotland’s reputation as a world leading events destination.
