This award honors Lucia Russell Briggs, second president of Milwaukee-Downer College and one of the most beloved and influential figures in that college’s history . Nancy J. Mattson ’76, founder, managing director, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Argent Group Ltd ,. is being honored for her remarkable vision and leadership throughout her career in the financial industry . Nancy previously served as vice president at Bank of America, earning the fastest promotion to that rank in the company’s history . In 1982, she helped found Argent, a boutique investment banking firm specializing in asset-based and structured financings of large-ticket capital assets . She is an industry expert in maritime finance and received the United States Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award in 1987 for her work as a financial advisor on a multi-billion dollar program . THE NATHAN M. PUSEY YOUNG ALUMNI DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Presented to an alumnus or alumna of Lawrence University or Milwaukee- Downer College whose exemplary leadership and notable actions have contributed to the betterment of the entire Lawrence University community . Curien J. Kurrien ’01, editor-in-chief of GQ India, is being honored for his drive and ambition in establishing himself as a force in Indian journalism . In 2008, he launched GQ India at the age of 29, making him the youngest editor in publishing titan Condé Nast’s illustrious history . Since then, he has built the magazine into India’s leading men’s media brand . Before taking the helm at GQ India, he showed his range as a journalist, working as a reporter for a daily newspaper (The Indian Express), helping to launch a lifestyle magazine (Time Out Mumbai) and writing for an international wire service (Reuters) that brought his stories to The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Boston Globe. – 8 – THE GEORGE B. WALTER ’36 SERVICE TO SOCIETY AWARD Presented to an alumnus or alumna of Lawrence University or Milwaukee- Downer College who best exemplifies the ideals of a liberal education through its application to socially useful ends in the community, the nation or the world . This award honors George B . Walter ’36, faculty member, coach and dean of men, whose work at the college and beyond was guided by his conviction that every individual can and should make a positive difference in the world . Timothy A. Burnside ’02, museum specialist in curatorial affairs at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, is being recognized for her dedication to preserving modern culture and history for the betterment of society . She works closely with musicians, artists and others to build collections and develop exhibitions and programs that offer complex representations of history and cultural expression . Timothy began her career with the Smithsonian at the National Museum of American History in 2003 and launched that museum’s hip-hop collecting initiative in 2006 . She has since worked on many Smithsonian projects, including an exhibition about the Apollo Theater in Harlem, N Y. Timothy regularly presents at conferences across the country and speaks with college and graduate students about opportunities in the museum field .
