ALOHA-REEDVILLE WASHINGTON COUNTY BASELINE VERBATIM APPENDIX September 2011 Michael Riley & Crystal Bolyard Riley Research Associates Aloha-Reedville Study & Livable Community Plan Baseline Verbatim Appendix September 2011 Page 1 Q1. When it comes to maintaining or improving the quality of life in the Aloha Reedville area, what would you say are your top two or three issues? (Unaided) Annexing / Unincorporated Washington County (10 / 3%) Aloha is not incorporated can’t go to Hillsboro pool and THRP pool; nice to be included Aloha needs some maintenance, and the money that comes from Aloha goes to Beaverton Be a part of the Hillsboro or Beaverton community centers. We cannot belong to either one Don’t want Aloha to be a part of Beaverton. It is going to make a difference on taxes if we get absorbed by Beaverton Incorporate with Hillsboro and then take it from there It would be nice to be a city, and have those perks Like more transparency regarding Aloha government -- I don't even know if there is an Aloha government Maintaining the boundaries of Aloha-Reedville Might be annexed by Beaverton, and I would like to stay Washington County Where we are going to be annexed -- the boundary Aesthetics / Sanitation (44 / 11%) Improved appearance of community / Keep up the look of area (9) Vacant buildings / Junky looking buildings on TV Hwy / Clean up old buildings (8) Home owners’ up keep of properties / Property upkeep in neighborhoods (4) More trees (3) Cars parked everywhere / Too many cars in neighborhoods (2) Aesthetic planning Aloha is ugly, to beautify it would be great Area where Rio Ribs was, is an eye sore At the end of 209th, there is a clothes drop and people put trash there, and it drives me bonkers Beaverton looks nicer than Aloha area, and it's developed a little bit better Better upkeep of the downtown area Businesses that need to be fixed they are boarded up now City looks run down - non maintained buildings Community doesn’t look very appealing to incoming folks; make the community look cared for Community spending on initiative for improvement to area General appearance and signage Like to see my neighborhood cleaned up: lawns mowed -- weeds everywhere -- I’m speaking of individual properties. I would like to see more pride of ownership, even in renters Lot of parking lots and concrete More bylaws to keep it clean Pride in the community; maintain yards and bonding of the area; feeling of pride in the area, make it livable Quiet airport Sanitation, keeping the streets and businesses clean, making sure our food is safe Too much noise www.co.washington.or.us/alohareedville Aloha-Reedville Study & Livable Community Plan Baseline Verbatim Appendix September 2011 Page 2 Q1. When it comes to maintaining or improving the quality of life in the Aloha Reedville area, what would you say are your top two or three issues? (Unaided) (Continued) Bikes (19 / 5%) Bike lanes/paths/trails (14) Bicycle and walking access for 185th and TV Highway Bike lanes on 170th Bike lanes on Farmington Rd Improving the bike access on 198th on TV Hwy and 209th Neighborhood is really safe just traffic like bicycle people getting hit a lot Crime / Police / Safety (100 / 25%) Public safety / Neighborhood watches (24) Police enforcement/presence/protection / Police patrolling/coverage (17) Gang crime / Gang violence / Gang interactions / Gangs in the area and schools (14) Crime / Crime prevention / Crime rate / Decrease crime (10) Graffiti / Graffiti control / Graffiti removal (10) Drug houses/apartments / Getting rid of drugs in area (6) More speed control on the streets of residential areas (3) Clamp down on illegal immigration (2) Policing, keeping the bad guys locked up / Criminal retention (2) MAX brings people into the area that may have not come here before MAX. Drug users come here and use in the fields on Baseline and Jenkins. Drug deals right on the Max Own police force Pass ordinance to limit the numbers of cars on location; an illegal business operating Police doing a good job; I guess I don’t have a lot of concerns in the area. Police to do their job calling 911 and being put on hold Proper funding of the police Reducing graffiti around my area having everything clean Reducing the crime Safety for MAX transportation because there is a lot of crime going out of my house when it comes towards MAX Stronger police force Washington County curfew back in place; stop kids driving and walking around late at night until 1- 2 am; park should close at sundown; I’ll vote for the police to not get more money; they don’t do their job Writing from the gangs and crime has improved a little; enhanced police patrols Development / Zoning (29 / 7%) Closer shopping accessibility / More stores / More grocery stores (5) Building houses on every corner / Overbuilding / Too much commercial building (3) Restaurants (2) Clinics closer to the area because I have diabetes Commercial development in this area; live in the TV Hwy area and it's really a mishmash of old and new and this area definitely needs an upgrade Development Do not open up the urban boundaries any more - would water still flow if we lost power www.co.washington.or.us/alohareedville Aloha-Reedville Study & Livable Community Plan Baseline Verbatim Appendix September 2011 Page 3 Q1. When it comes to maintaining or improving the quality of life in the Aloha Reedville area, what would you say are your top two or three issues? (Unaided) (Continued) Development / Zoning (continued) Few more, bigger box stores like a Wal-Mart Green space more of them; open lands is bad use; not as nice as used to be; zoning the way they have developed it, no thought in it. House and then a business; not cohesive to take down trees, not pretty; open lots looks like there’s no heart of the town I like the urban growth boundary; I think that should be maintained Land use as far as commercial, as opposed to residential Loosen up the zoning a little bit, so it could be more like downtown. There could be a convenience store within walking distance. They've zoned all businesses out of residential. Maintaining farm land; stop growth at some point People need to be able to walk to where they shop safely. Everybody needs to be able to park in their own driveway so there is only access to the house from one side of the home to reduce the chance of crime Properties and businesses Restaurants make better food; something from downtown Portland; new restaurants new blood Saving farm land Store is far for me Store or men's club, is that necessary They keep building more houses, and I think they need to stop. They’re not putting in street lights and they're building too many apartments, and it's going to impact everyone's life. The area is looking slum-ish already. This will affect all the services Where the stores are, and how that's planned; types of stores and where they are Zoning: it seems like we're combining business and residential zones I like to keep these sectors separate Economy (37 / 9%) Jobs / Job development / Unemployment / Keeping businesses employed (20) Help for the needy / Helping others in community service (3) Improving business / More business (3) Fire services / Funding for fire department (2) Inflation--gas prices (2) Developing more small business in the area Economic environment I would like to see new businesses moving in and existing businesses prosper Economic growth and activity, more help for smaller businesses trying to stay here Fiscal management and planning, spending Getting the economy back up and going Low income resources are needed Prices of household goods and food www.co.washington.or.us/alohareedville Aloha-Reedville Study & Livable Community Plan Baseline Verbatim Appendix September 2011 Page 4 Q1. When it comes to maintaining or improving the quality of life in the Aloha Reedville area, what would you say are your top two or three issues? (Unaided) (Continued) Environment (4 / 1%) Recycling (2) Environment issues Recycling and conservation are big in our household. Would like to see more comprehensive local recycling Healthcare (11 / 3%) Healthcare system (4) Assistance for senior citizens Better healthcare for low income Getting rid of Obama’s healthcare Healthcare; availability of clinics in the area for all income levels Medical Price of healthcare Senior services Housing / Taxes (27 / 9%) Lower property taxes / Property taxes going up / Taxes (8) Affordable housing / Cost of housing to go back / Price of property; can’t afford to move (5) Population density / Too many people (5) Managing housing growth / Cookie cutter houses-overpopulation (3) Housing Housing market change HOA, or rules for the area, keep a limit of cars in the drive way Housing; we cannot do improvements or upgrade our home Infrastructure of TV Hwy - lot sizes for housing needs to stay as is Multifamily housing needs to be changed Property values Libraries / Parks (13 / 3%) More parks and open spaces / Parks and playgrounds / Lack of parks (26) Community centers are needed / More recreational centers and reading clubs (5) Cleaner parks -- free of trash, better maintenance / Upkeep of the local parks (3) Improve parks and recreation facilities (2) Library services (closer than Hillsboro & Beaverton) / Access to a library (2) Activities that we do for children after school; especially for special needs kids An arthritis pool (a pool warm enough for people like me) Dog parks Good parks, I really appreciate the parks here, we always have a restroom and trash service Keeping area available for parks Money, for the community: like for more libraries, or for parks More entertainment like a gym More security in the parks and there’s people that live at the parks No relationship parks in the Hillsboro area or Tualatin.
