Lifeguards patrol the swimming area from October to March. The baths are closed by the council when water quality deteriorates. Numerous stormwater drains discharge to the bay. Sewer overflows can discharge into the headwaters of the bay during wet weather. Actions Willoughby Council has installed litter traps on stormwater systems discharging to Sailors Bay. Willoughby Council conducts regular water quality monitoring at this site. Bathing water quality can be affected by bacterial contamination from sewer overflows higher up in the catchment of Middle Harbour.
