Learn-to-Swim Level Descriptions LEVEL I – INTRODUCTION TO WATER SKILLS - AGES 5 & UP Basic water safety rules will be learned, and beginner skills including front float, back float, arm movements, kicking, submerging mouth, nose, and eyes, and bubble blowing. LEVEL II – FUNDAMENTAL AQUATIC SKILLS Basic water safety topics will be covered plus using lifejackets. Swimming skills this level focuses on include front and back glide, treading, basic swimming on front and back. LEVEL III – STROKE DEVELOPMENT Water safety self help using survival floating and helping others with the use of a reaching assist will be included in this course, in addition to these swimming skills: Rotary breathing for front crawl, building endurance for both the front and back crawl strokes, Elementary Backstroke, and Scissor kick. LEVEL IV – STROKE IMPROVEMENT Safety topics for this level help students make good decisions about their own safety in certain situations. Breaststroke, Sidestroke, Butterfly are introduced at this level. LEVEL V – STROKE REFINEMENT Water safety skills include survival swimming. Refining all swimming strokes and increasing endurance is included in this level. Elements of competitive swimming are introduced including flip turns. LEVEL VI – FITNESS SWIMMING Competitive/fitness swimming skills including turns for each stroke, use of a pace clock, use of fitness equipment, and continuous development of swimming endurance and technique. LEVEL VI - PERSONAL WATER SAFETY This course is offered during the summer months and includes self rescue skills in addition to competitive/fitness swimming skills including turns for each stroke. WATER BABIES This course is designed for ages 6 months through 2 years. Water safety and water adjustment skills will be taught. This course requires a parent or guardian to accompany each child in the water and is conducted in the Civic Center main and activity pools. PRESCHOOL This class is designed for children ages 3-4 years and is conducted in the activity pool at the Civic Center and the 2 foot section of the Outdoor pool. Focus is on water safety, water adjustment, and basic swimming skills. .
