WINNIPEG CHINESE CULTURAL AND COMMUNITY CENTRE PROFILE Winnipeg is a city of many cultures of which the Chinese community has always been an integral and significant part. Over the last few decades, as the number of Chinese immigrants increased, so has the need for redeveloping Winnipeg’s Chinatown. In 1981, the redevelopment became a reality with the support of the three levels of government through the Winnipeg Core Area Initiative and the Chinese community itself. The Winnipeg Chinatown Corporation was established in 1981, and in 1983 the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre was incorporated as part the overall development project in response to a survey conducted in 1982 wherein 90% of the Chinese in Winnipeg indicated a need for such a facility. OBJECTIVES To promote and advance the awareness, knowledge and appreciation of the Chinese culture in relation to the multi-cultural mosaic of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Canada. To increase understanding between the various Chinese and non- Chinese organizations in Manitoba. To encourage public understanding of matters relating to the affairs of the Chinese Community. To provide facilities for educational, cultural and recreational purposes. 1 WINNIPEG CHINESE CULTURAL AND COMMUNITY CENTRE BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2012 – 2013 The Rt. Hon. Edward R. So many milestones were reached for the community. We closed off last year with another great Christmas Party at Government House and collected several bins of food for Winnipeg Harvest. 2013 was kicked off with Chinese New Year open-houses and public celebrations at The Forks Market and at the centre. As well, we recorded another sell-out at our New Year’s Banquet at Kum Koon. Many of the annual programs and events continued this year including the community volunteer income tax program, the women’s health program, the Canada Day celebration at the WCCCC, Chinese passport renewal service, the Asian Heritage Festival, the Summer Lunch Concert Series and the Winnipeg Chinatown Street Festival. We also had many other special guests visit Winnipeg and many special events held this past year. The Consul General of the People’s Republic of China Fang Li returned to Winnipeg and made several subsequent visits. He brought greetings at our New Year’s Banquet and hosted another banquet the following night. As our most active Consul General, he also visited Winnipeg for our grand opening of Peace Tower, for the National Congress of Chinese Canadians National Convention and the Golden Dragon Gala. The community received a special treat with the Consul General hosting a reception at the Fort Garry Hotel to celebrate the Chinese National Day. Another very important guest this year was from PR of China’s Ambassador to Canada His Excellency Zhang Junsai from Ottawa. During his first official visit to Manitoba, he had a wonderful opportunity to experience Winnipeg’s friendliness and evaluate our province’s potential as a trading partner. The youth group again stepped up and organized many exciting events. The helped organize a very successful cultural arts night at the centre and played a major role in the annual Zhonghua Cup Basketball Tournament in our gymnasium. As well, they came out to volunteer at so many of our events. Without the youth group’s involvement and commitment, we would not be able to do all that we accomplish at the WCCCC. As I mentioned earlier, we had several special milestones and special occasions. After a lot of hard work, Peace Tower was finally completed. The state-of-the-art housing is now fully- occupied, and our grand opening brought out many friends of the community. This is just the start of our plan to bring vibrancy to our Chinatown. This was a huge milestone for our community. We just wrapped up another very successful Golden Dragon Awards Gala. This year we honoured Her Honour Anita Lee and Dr. David Barnard. This was the most successful one we have had to date. It is our chief fundraiser, but it also offered a chance for community at large to thank the honourees’ contributions to our province. Personally, this was a very special year for me. In April, I celebrated my 80th Birthday. Members of the board and community got together and put on a big birthday party in our gym. Many friends, old and new, came out to celebrate. It was an unforgettable night for me. If that was not exciting enough, I was also bestowed another special gift a few months later. The City 6 of Winnipeg named a portion of James Street (in front of the centre and at the entrance of Chinatown) Honourary Dr. Joseph Du Way. For myself and my family, we are forever touched by this gesture. There are many more events that took place over the year. I certainly missed out on a few. I am so proud of our centre and how we keep bringing in great events and programs. In closing, I would like to thank the many wonderful friends of the WCCCC for their continued support. In particular, I would like to say a special thank you to the hardworking Board of Directors, the staffs and volunteers. The WCCCC’s success is largely due to their dedicated contributions and commitments. Your support and dedication is appreciated. Dr. Joseph Du, CM, OM, FAAP, FRCP(c), MD President 余岳兴医生 7 2012 ZHONGHUA CUP COMMUNITY BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT To promote youth involvement in the community, to diversify the community activities, we continue to host the Zhonghua Cup basketball tournament in the WCCCC gym in the November 2012. This year, we had eight teams to participate whose age were from 17 to age 50. Those teams contained new and old immigrants, high school students, international students, local Canadian born Chinese and Caucasians. Some Chinese organizations also formed the teams to join the tournament. The major sponsors are Royal Bank, Main and James branch, Manitoba Basketball Association, Manitoba China Time, MLIC, Young’s Trading, Giant Tiger, Safeway etc. The registration fee for each team is $60.00. Our biggest expense is to pay the referee service. Champion team is Great Wall; 2nd Place is Waffles; the 3rd Place is MCT. Zhonghua Cup basketball tournament has been built up by its name and reputation. We trust with the new gym facilities, the improved tournament system, and the support from the local business, we shall be able to run better tournament year after year. 2012 WCCCC CHRISTMAS PARTY The 2012 WCCCC Christmas Party was held at the Government House on December 7, 2012. The board members from WCCCC and WCDC, business partners, staffs, and volunteers were invited to the party. There were over 120 people, including the Lieutenant Governor, Premier and Provincial Ministers, attended the party. Everyone enjoyed the food and had a good time at the party. 2013 CHINESE NEW YEAR BANQUET The Winnipeg Chinatown Development Corporation and Manitoba Chinese Benevolent Association hosted a Chinese New Year Banquet on February 12, 2013 at Kum Koon Garden Restaurant. There were over 600 guests attending the banquet. 8 Dr. Tina Chen is the master of ceremonies. During the banquet, the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba Hon.
