2016-2017 EDITION Dear Salt Lake Chamber Members

ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017 EDITION Dear Salt Lake Chamber Members, This year the Salt Lake Chamber is celebrating its 130 year anniversary! As an organization older than the state of Utah, the Salt Lake Chamber has stood as the voice of business since 1887. Since our inception, the Chamber has been a key driver in efforts to grow the economy and enhance the quality of life in all of Utah. We have shown what’s possible when the business community engages, collaborates, and invests in making Utah the best state to live, work, learn, and play. The spirit of collaboration between the business community, the Governor and our Legislature is as strong as ever. By working hand-in-hand, we saw the successful passage of many of our 2017 key priorities, including regulation reform, education funding and efforts to improve Utah’s air quality. The Chamber also partnered with initiatives like Talent Ready Utah and the 25k Jobs Tour in an effort to develop Utah’s future workforce. The Salt Lake Chamber continues to be a gathering place for business leaders and the community at large. Through our programs, and those of our partners, the Chamber has directly engaged more than 400,000 members and business professionals. The Chamber’s 130th Gala Celebration was a huge success with more than 1,500 people in attendance. During the event, past chairs of the Chamber Board of Governors honored Chamber President and CEO Lane Beattie with the 38th Giant in Our City Award. As a member of the Chamber you have an incredible opportunity to get involved, be part of the conversation, and help create the direction of Utah’s future. Through the Chamber you can engage, lead and help sustain Utah’s reputation as the best state for business. We invite you to review our 2016-2017 Annual Report, which outlines our policy work, events, and accomplishments as well as highlights our successes in business and community leadership. We hope this inspires you to become more involved in the coming year. We greatly appreciate your support as a member. If you are not yet a member, this is a great time for you to join us. Thanks to the business community, the Salt Lake Chamber has remained Utah’s “voice of business” for 130 years. To help commemorate this momentous occasion, Utah’s business and community leaders gathered at the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater for the Chamber’s 130th Gala Celebration. During the event, past chairs of the Chamber Board of Governors honored Chamber President and CEO Lane Beattie with the 38th Giant in Our City Award. Since Beattie took the helm as president and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber in 2003, he has transformed the 130-year-old statewide institution into a powerhouse of influence that stands for all Utah business. With this stewardship, the Chamber has embraced a new era of business and policy leadership by blending the traditional business chamber with powerful, top-notch business advocacy. “I appreciate Lane Beattie’s friendship and leadership. The Chamber has been an integral part in helping the Utah story be told, and to have the success we’ve had as the best performing economy in all of America today; upward mobility, best place for business, largest growing middle class, great tributes coming in about Utah because of the efforts of Lane Beattie and the Salt Lake Chamber.” – Governor Gary Herbert 5 SALT LAKE CHAMBER SINCE VOICE OF BUSINESS BURYING HISTORY During the Chamber’s Board Retreat on June 13, 2017, the Chamber’s new time capsule was placed back into the cornerstone of the Commercial Club Building. The new time capsule, like the original, was handcrafted out of Kennecott copper and was filled with items intended to preserve the Chamber’s history. “When the first time capsule was placed in 1909, the Commercial Club Building was heralded as a sign of community progress and a show of strength for the Beehive State’s burgeoning business community. Now here we are, 108 years later, and Utah is known for being the best state for business and one of the top economies in the country. We are proud of the Salt Lake Chamber’s role in Utah’s business and economic success, and we’re excited to preserve some of our history for future generations.” - Lane Beattie, President & CEO, Salt Lake Chamber On July 5, 1909, members of the Commercial Club placed a time capsule behind the cornerstone of the Commercial Club Building at 32 Exchange Place.
