OPENING ACTIVITIES/MISSION STATEMENT The Mission of the Bridgeton Public School District is to provide multiple pathways for all students to attain the New Jersey Student Learning Standards and meet the needs of our diverse student population. ADJOURNMENT 4 BOE Public Action Meeting Date: May 2, 2017 @ 6:00 PM-Cherry Street School REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS FOR MAY May 2, 2017 To the President and Members of the Board of Education Your Superintendent desires to submit the following report: BRIDGETON BOARD OF EDUCATION AGENDA Item 2.1 *Approval of Textbooks/Curriculum - None Item 2.2 a-b *Approval of Professional Development a. To approve Phyllis M. Annett, Sax Arts Consultant from School Specialty, to present a workshop for K-12 District Visual Arts Teachers on May 19, 2017 at BHS in room F5 during the one session PD day from 1:00-3:00 PM. Information and techniques for using new art materials and resources will be shared. b. To approve an Instrument Inventory Workshop to be conducted by Coles Music Service for the Instrumental and General Music Teachers on May 19, 2017 during the one session PD day. Teachers will create a web-based district inventory of all instruments in the district collection and identify instruments for summer repair. Item 2.3 a-u *Approval of Student Programs a. To approve Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Parent Workshops for students who attend the BHS SAT prep classes during the month of May at the Buckshutem Road School cafeteria. These parent workshops will consist of topics to include how to help your child prepare for college, help with FAFSA, as well as strategies on how to successfully choose a college and career. Six parent workshops will be held on May 5, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23 and will coincide with the SAT prep classes. Supplies to include materials for each workshop and light refreshments. Total cost of $1200.00, Acct. # 20-468-100-610-00-40. b. To approve "Know Your Rights" Immigration Seminar on May 25, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 PM at BHS. The presentation will focus on the pressing immigration issues and questions present in the Bridgeton community today. It is designed to help parents navigate the process as smoothly as possible and prepare for possible outcomes. The program will focus on the following topics: emergency planning for detention and deportation, power of attorney and the rights anyone is entitled to in case of contact with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Presentation by the Immigration Justice Clinic from Rutgers Law School, no cost to the board. 5 BOE Public Action Meeting Date: May 2, 2017 @ 6:00 PM-Cherry Street School c. To approve Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Parent University for June 13, 2017 from 5:30 to 8:00 PM at Buckshutem Road School cafeteria. Parent University is an engaging partnership between parents and educators with the goal of working together to promote student success. Parents will be offered various workshops to assist them with parenting and furthering their child's education. Childcare and transportation will be provided for families. Funded by the Family & Community Engagement Expansion Grant. Total cost of $3,000.00,Acct. # 20-458- 100-101-00-40. d. To approve the Community and Parental Involvement Specialist (CPIS) Cafe and Appreciation Night on May 16, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Buckshutem Road School cafeteria in collaboration with Bridgeton Municipal Alliance. Implementation provides the perfect opportunity to infuse and expand evidence based components of FAST (Families and Schools Together) and identify community and parental 3 “Promoters’” who become Community and Parental Engagement Advocates (CPEA’s) in their respective communities. The ultimate goal of this activity is to begin to move parents and community members from involvement to engagement in a cyclical series of activities and events that holistically produce maximized outcomes educationally and socially for families. Total cost of $500.00, Acct. #20- 237200-610-06-40. e. To approve the Pathways & Cherry Street 21st CCLC programs to hold an end of the year dance to celebrate a successful year of programming. The event will be held on June 2, 2017 from 6:30-8:30 PM at Buckshutem Road School in the Gymnasium. Students will be charged $2.00, which will provide them with pizza and a drink as well as admission to the dance. There is no cost to the board. f. To approve BHS Summer School Program from July 10 - August 4, 2017, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM for students, Teacher hours 8:45 AM to 1:15 PM, and Security 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
