For this purpose it has been found necessary to divide the subject-matter of the ENCYCLOPEDIAina somewhat different manner from that adopted for editorial purposes in the various departments. Several sections united under the con• trol of one editor have been placed in more logical order in different parts of the following account, while, on the other hand, sections which were divided among different editors have here been brought together under one head. In a long list at the end the chief articles are enumerated in alphabetical order, with indication as to illustrations, so that by running through these the variety and extent of ground covered by the ENCYCI,OPEDIAcanbe gath• ered at once. In addition, I have in the earlier of these pages classified the majority oi the articles thus indexed in some sort of logical order. In making a selection of 2,000 articles out of 16,606, some may have 'been omit• ted which others would have included, and doubtless several have been included which others would have omitted. I can only state that every care has been taken to make the selections representative.
