Instead of cleaning up the awards for theatre — where it was virtually snubbed — the company won eight awards in the musical category for its coproduction of Once with John Frost, including best production, director and male and female leads. The MTC, which also won a dance award for its coproduction with Chunky Move, tied with Opera Australia to be the two most successful companies with 10 gongs each. But our flagship theatre company came a distant fourth in the theatre category — behind the Malthouse Theatre, Bell Shakespeare and Red Stitch Actors Theatre — picking up only one award for sound design. It’s highly touted Neon Festival of Independent Theatre also managed only one award in the independent theatre category. Opera Australia’s “Eugene Onegin” won seven awards, including female lead for Nicole Car. Source: Supplied Last year marked a change of direction for the MTC as it invested more heavily in popular co productions, such as Once and the world premiere of The Speechmaker with the Working Dog team. Both were boxoffice winners. The recipients of this year’s 62 Green Room Awards, announced at the Comedy Theatre, were recognised for outstanding work in performing arts seen on Melbourne stages. Bell Shakespeare won the coveted award for best theatre production for Henry V; best actor went to Andre de Vanny for Red Stitch’s Glory Dazed, and best female actor went to Melita Jurisic for Malthouse Theatre’s Night on Bald Mountain. Opera Australia dominated its category, winning seven awards including best production, director, conductor and female lead for Eugene Onegin. It also picked up three musical awards for The King and I, another coproduction with John Frost. But OA didn’t scoop the pool entirely. The Malthouse Theatre will be jubilant after winning two opera awards for its coproduction of The Riders with Victorian Opera, a stage adaptation of Tim Winton’s http://www.heraldsun.com.au/entertainment/arts/melbourne-theatre-company-dominates-green-room-awards-but-not-for-theatre/story-fni0fcgk-1227312347021 2/10 4/30/2015 Melbourne Theatre Company dominates Green Room Awards — but not for theatre | Herald Sun novel. Best production went to Bell Shakespeare’s “Henry V”. The popular and hotly contested cabaret category produced six different winners for six awards, including best artist Geraldine Quinn. The 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award went to Nance Grant, for her outstanding contribution to opera as a singer and teacher. Bangarra Dance Theatre’s “Patyegarang” won two awards. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/entertainment/arts/melbourne-theatre-company-dominates-green-room-awards-but-not-for-theatre/story-fni0fcgk-1227312347021 3/10 4/30/2015 Melbourne Theatre Company dominates Green Room Awards — but not for theatre | Herald Sun Source: Supplied GREEN ROOM AWARD WINNERS 2015 CABARET Production Eurosmash Die Roten Punkte Artist Geraldine Quinn All Out Of Pride & MDMA: Modern Day Maiden Aunt Writing Ash Flanders Special Victim Musical Direction Jane Patterson Ginger & Tonic’s Desperate & Dateless Original Songs Andrew Strano and Loclan MackenzieSpencer Nailed It!
