And let's welcome 2016 as a year of infinite possibilities. I'm so excited to see everyone and am hoping that your holiday season was filled with love, joy & Orchids! We have such an exciting year planned and will need lots of volunteers to pull it off. We start with our January 27th meeting & a visit from Chris Janko, GardenWorks tropical garden expert to talk to us about Miniature Orchids. Then we get to visit GardenWorks February 6th & 7th to participate in their annual Orchid Festival. This is a lot of fun and we need volunteers. There are 3 locations and with 2 shifts of 2 people for each day at each location – we need 16 people to sign up & come join the fun. You get to talk to all sorts of people about one of your favourite subjects – Orchids! Maybe even repot a couple to show folks how it's done. There will be sign-up sheets on the front table so come join us. Our Culture class on February 8th is being led by Don Harquail with an excellent presentation on Paphiopedilums. Lots of good information from an excellent grower. If you have friends or loved ones in Victoria that you'd like to spend Valentine's Day with, why not combine it with another vol- unteer opportunity? The Victoria Orchid Show & Sale is February 13th & 14th and we need people to take our orchids over, set up our display and bring the orchids back to their loving owners at the end. This is a great opportunity to practice your creativity during the set up & meet lots of new orchid enthusiasts. Please remember – if we don't participate in other Societies shows they won't participate in ours, then everyone loses. Again – more information and sign-up sheets will be at the next meeting. For our Speaker on February 24th, we have David Lafarge from France, a noted author and editor, coming to speak to us about his special love, Phalaenopsis. Our Culture Class March 14th will feature something new! Margaret Prat will be taking us through an AOS Webinar on growing in semi-hydropondic media. At our meeting March 23rd, our own Adnan Uzunovic, a research scientist & Orchid lover, will be explaining the ins and outs of Wardian Cases. I'm still at the fish tank stage so I'm looking forward to picking up some good tips. This brings us to our big show of the year. Our Annual Show & Sale is slated for Easter Weekend, March 26th & 27th (plus set up & preview party on March 25th) and this year should even make that famous Bunny sit up & take notice! Our vendors list (so far) in- cludes Ching Hua Orchids & Ten Shin Gardens, both from Taiwan, Forestview Gardens, Paramount Orchids & Tropical Gardens Orchids for plants as well as Bestco Mgmt. for our additional supplies. Members who have booked tables so far are Melanie Gallacher, Richard Pearson & Eugene Banziger. Lots of new plants to admire & buy, so start saving those pennies! We also have a few surprises to ramp things up this year. Of course, none of this is possible without you, the members, volunteering. It takes a lot of people and commit- ment to make this happen & we're counting on you! Culture Class on April 11th will be our Annual repotting session, again led by Margaret Prat. Always fun and informative. The April 27th meeting's speaker will be Lorne Heshka, an expert in Native Orchids. Lorne is an author & photographer and will have some really interesting things to show us. On May 9th our Culture Class will feature Chris Janko who will give us tips on moving our plants outside for the summer. The May 27th meeting will feature Helen Richards, a life-time member of the Australian Native Orchid Society will be talking to us about orchids from her part of the world. On June 22nd, Thomas Mirenda Curator for Orchids for the Smithsonian Institute, who I'm sure you've read in the AOS magazine, will be our speaker. I can hardly wait to hear what he has to say. Well, let's see what the score is here! 4 International & 2 local, very knowledgeable speakers 5 interesting & informative Culture Classes 2 International, 4 local and 3 hobby vendors (so far) coming to our annual show and sale & 3 major events to volunteer to help with (as well as regular help at meetings) I'd say that the scope of speakers, events & information that we've got coming your way is worth the sweat equity it takes to make it happen. If you have questions about the volunteer positions (or want to volunteer) please e-mail our volunteer co-ordinator, Jennifer Pell at [email protected]. Please remember – This is YOUR Society and nothing happens without your participation. See you at the sign-up sheets!
