UR S E SHORTHAND is designed to supply the need of a m sufii ci entl l syste y easy , regular , and legible , for genera use , and at the sam e tim e brief enough to be adapted to reporting u p rposes . The advantages to be derived from a kn owledg e of short a suffi ci entl m ll h nd are y obvious , and are oreover very fu y set forth by m any other wr iters on the subject . The principles upon whi ch a good system should be constructed are m uch less I m a be generally understood . y pardoned therefore if in li s i new m I pub h ng a _ syste proceed at once to the considera k e tion of the principles it involves, ta ing it for grant d that the reader full y appreciates the benefits resultin g from a practi cal m i t. acquaintance with the art , and seriously desires to aster The ai m of every shorth and inventor h a s always been to produce a system of writing which shoul d be as brief as is com patible with the conditions that it should also be sim ple l a Th e to earn , e sy to write , and easy to read . widest divergence t e of opinion exists , however , in the interpretation of these qui r em ents. The relative i m portance to be attached to the m l li qualities of Brevity , Si p icity , Facility , and Legibi ty , de l pends in part on the purpose to which shorthand is app ied . For reporting purposes brevity is a m ost essential condition ; ' but for general use legibi lity is m uch m ore indispensable , and ' r i s com ar ati vel l l Th e a ve y high rate of speed p y va ue ess. o m l reas n why shorthand is not ore general y practised , appears ffi i t k to m e to be that this point is not su c en ly ept in view .
