Box 7403, Cairns, QLD 4870 November 2011 Newsletter Contents: President’s Report Shoelaces Upcoming CRR events Upcoming events Letters to the editor Recent CRR events Our wonderful sponsors President’s Report Koah Race on Saturday, 19 November - new event on the calendar, so come along and be one of the first runners to do this race. 5km, 10km or 15km. Car pool via Facebook?! Thank you Paul Ryan and Allan Courtney for your help in getting the event organised. On Thursday, 1 December, there’s a Christmas Party and Presentation Night for all Cairns Road Runners and supporters at the Edge Hill Memorial Bowls Club. All Club members’ barefoot bowls game will be covered by the Club, you’ll need to pay for other players ($10.00) and your own dinner and drinks. There’s also the Sweaty Santa Fun Run (Sunday, 4 December) – we need numbers to cater for the FREE breakfast. Please RSVP or enter for these events on our website under “Events ”. You’ll notice we are using a new online registration system. There are a few hiccups, but I’m working on those and it will make things much easier for the registration people if you can make use of this system. Ignore any membership numbers. Numbers will be changing for 2012, so we’ll send you an update on that once Mel is organised and set up with her ‘secretarial’ duties… At least 54 Cairns Road Runners completed an event in the Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival on 12 November. What a fantastic effort. We had eight Cairns Road Runners in the 74km ultra trail race from Cairns to Port Douglas: Keith Fearon (7 th ), Taras Jakubovsky (9 th ), Larry Lawson (14 th ), Mel Akmentins (21 st ), Teri Orr (26 th ), Rob Apps (30 th ) and David Elms (35 th ). Simon Dobbs made it down the Bump Track before he pulled out. Read the full race report later in this newsletter. Well done to Mel and Rob, who were doing their first Ultra. You are all superstars! In the 21km race, five CRR finished in the top 10 – out of 307 runners!!! Phil Bradshaw (2 nd ), Nick Carling (3 rd ), Steve Cunningham (6 th ), Steven Francis (7 th ) and Gary Bryant (9 th ). Club member Jo Carman was the first woman, and junior club member, Mathew Phillips was the first Junior home! A special congratulations also goes to Beginner Runner Clinic graduate Jane Kahler completing her first 21km. In the 10km race, Rob Mackenzie finished 2nd overall. And a splendid effort by the Beginner Runner Clinic graduates Rosie Ball, Alisia Bean, Sally Dixon and Donna Lupson completing the 10km race as well. Names of all Club members in the race later in the newsletter. If I missed you out, can you PLEASE email me so I can fix it up. The 2012 Committee members’ roles are being fine-tuned with various members offering to pick up some of the jobs I’ve been doing over the past few years. Mel Akmentins will take over from Kathy, she’ll deal with membership applications and keep the database current. She is also going to help John Vaughan , who is going to keep an eye on, write and submit grants on behalf of the Club. John will also help at events as the MC. Sarah Griffiths is approaching our sponsors for 2012, she is also the race organiser for the Kuranda to Port Douglas Ultra at the end of August. Larry Lawson and Gareth Smith have decided there are enough committee members dealing with the ‘paperwork’ side of things – they will be mapping our courses (including all the new events coming up) and keeping the equipment and trailer all up to date and usable. Rosie Ball , of course, will continue to do all the money stuff, including paying and demanding payments, monitoring online registrations, consolidating and banking race monies, and so on. I’ll pick up the rest for now, until someone offers to do it for me! There’s a bit of a list on the next page. Media officer – update websites with events Webmaster – update the CRR website with photos, race reports, etc. Newsletter editor Race organisers Life member Jim Cavill got injured at the Moonlight Gorge Gallop on 11 November. When you see him around, make sure to have a chat and make him feel better! He lives on his own, so would welcome some support if you are in the area (he lives in Anderson Street). Let me know if you need his number and I’ll pass it on. The 2011 Management Committee said their farewells at the AGM in October. A big thank you goes to these committee members, who all stepped in to help with various aspects of running the Club in2011. Nathan Moore (vice president) has left Cairns for Brisbane. He was an invaluable committee member and designed a great recording sheet we now use on a regular basis at our races. He was also a regular helper at numerous events throughout the year. Secretary Kathy Kennedy did a fantastic job keeping the database up to date, taking minutes and doing various other bits of ‘paperwork’ duties, despite studying full time, working and running her own business! Rosie Ball (treasurer) joined the committee in February and has quickly established herself as a hard-working, efficient lady of the books. Rosie is the treasurer again for 2012. Ian Valentine helped out with the trail runs and also as a regular volunteer. He was the race director for the Black Snake in May. Kylie Colman oversaw the socials for the Club and was responsible for the Relay for Life team, the Christmas in July and also the Super Sign On Day (held on the same day as our Kuranda to Port Douglas race). Nick Carling joined the team in February. He was in charge of the regular weekly runs up at Port Douglas. A huge thank you to all these wonderful people, the Club would not be the same without your support! A few last things: Most recent 2012 calendar on our website under Events. Print out and comment. A meeting will be called shortly for those keen to be involved in planning the trail runs for 2012 . Please email me so I can add you to the mailing list, if you are interested in helping out with this. See you out on the road or trail or at the next race!
