It is a season meant for preparation. What exactly are we preparing for? Two things: the celebration of Jesus’s birth and the anticipation of His second coming. These are weighty tasks with eternal consequences. A few weeks ago, Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles was elected the President of the USCCB. He stated, “Our mission as Catholics is to be missionary disciples. This is the only reason for our lives — to know and love Jesus and to serve his plan for the world’s salvation.” As missionary disciples, let us make the words of the Prophet Isaiah our motto for the Advent season: “Come, let us climb the Lord’s mountain to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may instruct us in his ways and we may walk in his paths.” Advent invites us to use these few weeks of Advent to focus on our spiritual lives which may seem like a steep climb up a mountain. The intentional use of the gift of time is what a missionary disciple is called to do, and with even greater intensity during Advent. How can we use our time to prepare for Jesus’ birth on December 25th and for His second coming sometime in the future? In the coming weeks, it seems everywhere we turn we are pushed to do more to create a “perfect” Christmas day. We can push back against the world’s pressure. We can scale back on materialism so that we can have more time for spiritual preparations: Confession, attending weekday Masses, Eucharistic adoration, family prayer time, the lighting of an Advent wreath, and acts of generosity and kindness. This Friday, Saint Joachim will host the All-American Boys Choir who will perform a collection of Advent and Christmas Hymns. This is an opportunity to invite to our church our friends and family members who are not members of Saint Joachim parish. In the end, Advent prepares us to celebrate a truly meaningful Christmas, become more like Jesus Christ, our Savior, and to be ready when He comes again in glory.
