Duringtheperiodsinceachievingitsindependence,theRepublicofMacedoniahasbeenstriving tobuildastablepoliticalandeconomiccommunity,withalegalsystemabletofacilitaterapid integrationintotheEuropeanUnionandthewiderinternationalcommunity.Thisprimarystrategic goalhasgivenrisetosectoraltargets,oneofwhichistheestablishmentofefficientenvironmental protectionmeasuresinordertoprovideabasisforanimprovedqualityoflife. Onecomponentofthisstrategicgoalistheconservationofbiodiversityandhabitats.Inthe processtowardachievingthisgoal,theRepublicofMacedoniahasratified: theConventionon BiologicalDiversity(1997), ConventiononWetlandsofInternationalImportanceParticularlyas WaterfowlHabitat(1997), ConventionontheConservationofEuropeanWildlifeandNatural Habitats(1997)andConventionontheConservationofMigratorySpeciesofWildAnimals (1999). Theseconventions,togetherwiththeinternationalagreementsassumedfromtheformerSocialist FederalRepublicofYugoslaviabymeansofsuccession,constitutepartofthenationallegislationand representabasisforbiodiversityconservation.
