Tel: 711799 (M) 07714 274910 Email: [email protected] 5 CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE FOR 2021 SEASON I hope that this Junior League Handbook finds you all safe and well during these terrible times, and to any who have suffered a loss in the family, or with friends, I offer my deepest sympathy. It appears with the Government Roadmap that we are hopefully returning to some ‘normal’ times, and cricket can contribute in both physical and mental ways, and it is the desire of the Junior League to plan for a full season to give the junior players in our area the chance to get out on a cricket field again and enjoy the game, their team mates and opponents, while parents can enjoy the company of others. Despite the pandemic there continues to be an encouraging growth in the number of teams entered. 100 teams are entered in the Junior League this season, with an increased number of 23 Clubs being involved. This is excluding our Under 7 teams. The number of juniors playing cricket is hopefully going to continue to rise again. This is due to several reasons, but one will be the launch of The Hundred this summer. Due to Covid 19 the start of this new competition was cancelled in 2020. The ECB expect interest in cricket among 7 to 11 year olds to peak during this tournament. I am pleased to confirm that we are returning to using an Incrediball at Under 9 level this season. I wish to thank Stuart Anderson, and his sub committee, who conducted extensive testing to ensure the best safest ball was selected. Safety must always be a high priority with the juniors but we must at all times also encourage them to participate and improve their skills. The senior League introduced a Development League in 2019, which proved a success. This is to try and encourage juniors to progress into adult cricket. This continues to be the challenge we face. All of us reading and using this Handbook are already committed to junior cricket, but we must encourage more participation. I hope that Clubs will work hard to encourage more volunteers, and that it is not left to the ‘same few’ to run all of your teams. As always the League, in particular Mick Dawson, and Club officials perform a vital role in the continued success of the League, so I urge you to give them your full support, and on behalf of the League I wish to thank all Officials and wish them well in the year ahead. 6 Kettlewell Fuels continue as our League and Cup Sponsors for the second year . They were fantastic sponsors in Year One (2019) and we are delighted that this is to continue. We thank them for their financial support of junior cricket, but also for the involvement that they have shown to the League. The Taverners representative teams, under the guidance of Emma Lyons, continue to progress, and the League funds are solidly controlled by Peter Walker, and we also must thank the Senior League for their financial support to junior cricket. So it continues to be a very exciting time for all Clubs with Junior Set-Ups, and I would, as always, encourage any Clubs without Junior Teams to really look at establishing one for the future benefit of cricket in the area. We continue to remain positive as the Junior League is still strong with 100 teams, but it would be a delight to get back to the levels of teams entered between 2008 and 2016, when over 100 teams per season were entered. Together we will face up to the challenge, and continue to help progress this wonderful game which will give our junior players of today such an enjoyable and active future.
