A native of Sullivan, he made his professional theatre debut in Keene, N.H. in 1951 when he was 16. After two additional seasons of summer stock near Atlantic City, he obtained his first Equity contract as a chorus singer. While at the University of Miami, he sang chorus and Needle work of the supporting roles with the Miami Opera Guild for three seasons.
