Alleluya, not as orphans Are we left in sorrow now; Alleluya, he is near us, Faith believes, nor questions how; Though the cloud from sight received him When the forty days were o'er, Shall our hearts forget his promise, 'I am with you evermore'? Alleluya, Bread of Angels, Thou on earth our food, our stay; Alleluya, here the sinful Flee to thee from day to day; Intercessor, Friend of sinners, Earth's Redeemer, plead for me, Where the songs of all the sinless Sweep across the crystal sea. Alleluya, King eternal, Thee the Lord of lords we own; Alleluya, born of Mary, Earth thy footstool, heaven thy throne: Thou within the veil hast entered, Robed in flesh, our great High Priest; Thou on earth both Priest and Victim In the Eucharistic Feast. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. All Amen. GLORIA The people remain standing for the singing of the Gloria. | 7 COLLECT Priest Lord Jesus Christ, we thank you that in this wonderful sacrament you have given us the memorial of your passion: grant us so to reverence the sacred mysteries of your body and blood that we may know within ourselves and show forth in our lives the fruits of your redemption; for you are alive and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen. MINISTRY OF THE WORD The people sit for the first reading from scripture. FIRST READING | EXODUS 24.3-8 Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the ordinances; and all the people answered with one voice, and said, ‘All the words that the Lord has spoken we will do.’ And Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord. He rose early in the morning, and built an altar at the foot of the mountain, and set up twelve pillars, corresponding to the twelve tribes of Isræl. He sent young men of the people of Isræl, who offered burnt-offerings and sacrificed oxen as offerings of well-being to the Lord. Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and half of the blood he dashed against the altar. Then he took the book of the covenant, and read it in the hearing of the people; and they said, ‘All that the Lord has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.’ Moses took the blood and dashed it on the people, and said, ‘See the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.’ Reader For the Word of the Lord, All thanks be to God. 8 | PSALM 116.10-17 In response to the reading, the Psalm is led by the Cantor All I will offer to You a thanksgiving sacrifice, and call on the name of the Lord 10 I kept my faith, even when I said, ‘I am greatly afflicted’; 11 I said in my consternation, ‘Everyone is a liar.’ /R 12 What shall I return to the Lord for all his bounty to me? 13 I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord, 14 I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people. /R 15 Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful ones. 16 O Lord, I am your servant; I am your servant, the child of your serving-maid. You have loosed my bonds. 17 I will offer to you a thanksgiving sacrifice and call on the name of the Lord. SECOND READING | 1 CORINTHIANS 10.14-21 Therefore, my dear friends, flee from the worship of idols. I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. Consider the people of Isræl; are not those who eat the sacrifices partners in the altar? What do I imply then? That food sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be partners with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. Reader For the Word of the Lord, All thanks be to God. | 9 GRADUAL HYMN | NEH 272 All for Jesus! All for Jesus! This our song shall ever be; For we have no hope, nor Saviour, If we have not hope in thee. All for Jesus! Thou wilt give us Strength to serve thee hour by hour: None can move us from thy presence While we trust thy love and power. All for Jesus! At thine altar Thou dost give us sweet content; There, dear Saviour, we receive thee In thy holy sacrament. All for Jesus! Thou hast loved us, All for Jesus! Thou hast died, All for Jesus! Thou art with us, All for Jesus, glorified! All for Jesus! All for Jesus! This the Church’s song shall be Till, at last, the flock is gathered One in love, and one in thee! Words: WJ Sparrow-Simson (1859-1952) Music: All For Jesus, John Stainer (1840-1901) 10 | GOSPEL | MARK 14.12-16, 22-26 The people remain standing while the minister proclaims the Gospel.
