R. Curran (May-Nov 2006) INTRODUCTION The 2006 revisory field season for the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) was tasked to complete a number of high priority hydrographic surveys throughout the island portion of Newfoundland and Labrador. The purpose of these surveys was to acquire hydrographic data for use in updating existing CHS nautical products and production of new products, with the desired end result of increasing marine safety. All projects were established as part of the CHS Level of Service commitment to assess Charts on a cyclic basis and in response to client established priorities identified through the ISO Client Feedback Process. The program was financed and completed through the High Risk Charting Fund. Due to hydrographic staff members having commitments with other on-going hydrographic programs, this program was completed over two time periods. The first from May 23 to July 18 with Joseph Manning as Hydrographer in Charge (HIC) and the second from Sept 10 to Nov 22 with David Street as HIC. The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) provided the survey crew with a coxswain for both periods. The survey launch W. R. Curran was utilized as the platform to collect bathymetry. The W. R. Curran is a 7.6 meter Rosborough model RF-246 vessel with a draft of 0.7 meters. It was an ideal platform for this program as it can be transported between locations on a trailer and is easily launched and recovered. It is also highly maneuverable with a shallow draft making it ideal for harbour surveys. W. R. Curran 3 2006 Final Field Report — W. R. Curran (May-Nov 2006) PLANNING Planning commenced shortly after the Field Project Instructions were released. This involved acquiring the necessary data and documents for each survey project. Searches for existing documents were done utilizing the CHS Meta data database (CHSDIR). The searches were reviewed and all relevant documents were ordered for validation purposes Existing horizontal control was obtained from both the Geodetic Survey of Canada (GSC) and the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Government (NLPG) databases. Tidal and benchmark information was obtained from the Marine Environment Data Services (MEDS) database and from the Tidal Section of the CHS Atlantic Region. Digital shoreline at best scale was obtained from the NLPG Environment and Conservation, Surveys and Mapping Division. Improvements to resolve some of the W. R. Curran' s mechanical and hardware problems noted in the previous year's Final Field Report Document # 2600312 were also undertaken. The engine overheating problem was resolved by changing the engine's cooling system intake from the outboard leg to the launch's hull. An engine service was also done at this time. The mount for the hull mounted transducer was repaired and a new transducer was installed. The GPS antenna was moved directly above the transducer. Existing cabinets in the W R. Curran were modified and repaired to accommodate new equipment. A new computer and equipment interface box was installed and configured. A motion sensor was also installed and configured. CHRONOLOGY OF EVENTS May 23 — June 23 Mobilization of W. R. Curran which involved re-routing the engine cooling system, repairing the transducer mounting system, installing a new transducer, repositioning the GPS antenna and modifying cabinets. In addition a new computer and motion sensor were installed. June 26 Launched the W. R. Curran at St. Phillips and began trials. A temporary tide gauge was installed at Bell Island. This gauge would be used for reducing soundings on both the Bell Island and Port de Grave surveys. June 27 Established a horizontal control point on Bell Island for the RTK GPS reference station. June 28 Encountered a power loss problem onboard the W. R. Curran. This was attributed to batteries not being properly charged due to a worn alternator belt. Problem was rectified. June 29 Commenced Bell Island survey. 7 2006 Final Field Report — W. R. Curran (May-Nov 2006) June 30 — July 5 A power surge onboard the W. R. Curran damaged a circuit board in the Knudsen sounder. The sounder was shipped to Knudsen for repairs and returned on July 5. July 6 Bell Island survey was completed. W. R. Curran was steamed to St. Phillips were it was secured. July 7 The W. R. Curran was transported from St. Phillips to Fair Haven. by trailer. Fair Haven survey commenced. A temporary tide gauge was not installed for this project as soundings were reduced from the permanent tide gauge at Argentia. July 8 Fair Haven survey completed and the W. R. Curran was transported by trailer to St. John's. July 11 The W. R. Curran was transported by trailer from St. John's to Port de Grave. The survey crew met with the Port de Grave Harbour Authority to discuss which areas of the harbour had recently changed and required surveys. A plan was developed on how to move vessels around so as to provide access to required survey areas. Survey at Port de Grave commenced. July 12-13 Surveying at Port de Grave. July 14 Survey crew met with Port de Grave Harbour Authority to discuss and review the results of the survey. The Harbour Authority was pleased and did not see any reason for additional work. July 15 Completed survey at Port de Grave and returned the W. R. Curran to the CCG base in St. John's by trailer. July 18 Recovered the temporary tide gauge from Bell Island. July 18 — Sep 10 Survey was suspended as hydrographic staff was involved with other hydrographic field programs. September 10-12 W. R. Curran was launched in St. John's for trials to ensure it was operating properly for the upcoming Fermeuse project. Mechanical problems that were found and resolved included a faulty engine temperature sensor and a loose alternator belt. Repairs were also made to the trailers lights and rollers. Mike Nickerson trained David Street in the basic operations of the W. R. Curran. Data was collected and processed which verified the equipment was operational. W R. Curran was recovered and stored at the CCG base on September 12. 8 2006 Final Field Report — W. R. Curran (May-Nov 2006) September 13 Field operations were temporarily suspended due to poor weather and sea conditions. Survey crew spent day at the office planning for the up-coming Fermeuse project. September 14 A reconnaissance survey was done at Fermeuse. This involved recovering and leveling two benchmarks. Two horizontal control monuments were also located. The nearest suitable launching site for the W. R. Curran was determined to be a launching ramp at Cape Broyle which was a 1.5 hour steam from Fermeuse. September 15 The W. R. Curran was transported from St. John's to Cape Broyle by trailer and launched at Cape Broyle. The W. R. Curran was steamed from Cape Broyle to Fermeuse.
