Local Newscasts: WAGA airs 50.5 hours of local news each week (including rebroadcasts), at the following times: Monday – Friday: 5 a.m. – 9 a.m. Monday – Friday: 12 noon – 12.30 p.m. Monday – Friday (11/1/05 – 10/31/07 only): 12:30 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Monday – Friday: 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. Monday – Friday: 10:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. Monday – Friday: 1:00 a.m. – 2:00 a.m. (rebroadcast) Saturday: 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. Sunday: 6 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Saturday – Sunday: 10 p.m. – 11 p.m. Saturday – Sunday: 1:00 a.m. – 2:00 a.m. (rebroadcast) b. Breaking News Stories: WAGA broke into and/or preempted regularly scheduled programming on numerous occasions during the period covered by this report in order to bring its viewers breaking news or severe weather information, as well as amber alerts, school closings, and other emergencies. Local News Stories: Some important local stories covered by WAGA during the report period are as follows: • Health Watch: WAGA broadcasts medical-related programming during the newscast Monday through Friday, including stories 2 about women and heart attacks, cancer vaccines, Bird Flu fears and tainted tissue sales • Wednesday’s Child: In partnership with the Freddie Mac Foundation and the Georgia Department of Human Resources and the Office of Adoptions, a story is aired every Wednesday featuring a child with special needs who is available for adoption. More than 60 children have been adopted since the program was established. • I-Team: A team of WAGA reporters who investigate stories of local interest. Investigations aired during the report period include: o Health inspection records at Atlanta’s airport restaurants o Indictment of a state Revenue Department employee who was directing state purchases to companies controlled by himself and his family o Voter fraud in a Chattooga County judicial race, leading to a state investigation o Underage drinking on university campuses A comprehensive list of important local news aired on WAGA during the report period is attached as Exhibit 2. d. Political Coverage: WAGA provides comprehensive coverage of debates, town hall meetings and public forums, including: • Debate in Albany among the four Democrat candidates for governor of Georgia. FOX 5’s Russ Spencer was a panelist. • Debate between candidates for the 4th District Congressional seat between incumbent Cynthia McKinney and Hank Johnson. The debate was moderated by FOX 5’s Morse Diggs and broadcast on GPTV and C-Span. • Democrat candidates for lieutenant governor square off a debate broadcast on GPTV. The report on the debate included sound from both candidates. FOX 5’s Morse Diggs moderated the debate. A list of political coverage during the report period is attached as Exhibit 3. e. Local interest: Some programs aired of local interest include: • Martin Luther King Commemorative Service: Annual production of a live 2½ hour broadcast commemorating Dr. King’s accomplishments and legacy. • Fox5 Pit Pass: Live recap of NASCAR race at Atlanta Motor Speedway • Fox5 High School Sports Show: A weekly review of sporting events at local and regional high schools 3 • Fox5 5th Quarter: A live recap of Atlanta Falcons’ games A list of public affairs programming is attached as Exhibit 4. f. II. PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS For the period January 8-21, 2007, 81:45 minutes of free PSAs were aired. For the week of June 11-24, 2007, 82:50 minutes of PSAs were aired. WAGA makes its air-time throughout the broadcast day available to public service announcements for a variety of causes, such as: • Yo Yo Mentoring • Seatbelt Principle (child driving safety) • Obesity (health) • USO (support for military families) A comprehensive list of PSAs in the report period is attached as Exhibit 6. III. PARTICIPATION IN COMMUNITY WAGA's management, on-air newscasters and behind-the-scenes employees have made a commitment to participate in the Atlanta community, as follows: Station employees participate on boards and in community organizations, including: • Board member, First Amendment Foundation • Board, Executive Committee and Capital Campaign, Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities • Board Member, National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Southeast Chapter • Board Director, Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education • Board Director, Rollins School of Public Health (Dean’s Council) at Emory University • Volunteer, Emory University Breast Cancer Project for African American Women 4 WAGA employees participate in diversity organizations, including the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the Native American Journalists Association. Management, on-air talent and reporters participated in numerous local community events, including: • Guest Reader, Dr Seuss Reading Program • Speaker, National Boys & Girls Clubs Symposium • Emcee for Georgia Women’s Institute at West Georgia College • Emcee, Carrie-Steele Pitts Orphanage fundraiser • Teacher, Radio Television News Directors Foundation (traveling throughout the U.S. to conduct workshops for journalism teachers and students) A complete list of ascertainments for the period is attached as Exhibit 7. IV. WEBSITE WAGA-TV launched the station’s website, myfoxatlanta.com in August 2006. The website provides extensive news, weather and traffic information, including live streaming of local newscasts, major news events and emergency weather information. Segments from each WAGA newscast are archived on the site and made available for viewing at any time. Text versions of local and national news stories are added to the site throughout the day. The website also offers stories on business, health, entertainment and sports information. Many on-air personalities contribute to the blog section of the website. Live chat pages are available, where users can communication with one another, as well as interact with WAGA employees. Users have the opportunity to express their opinions by voting on a variety of poll questions on topics related to news and popular culture.
