Impacts and opportunities. California has the nation’s largest ocean economy. 2005 93% HEALTHY OCEANS We need healthy oceans for our ocean economy to thrive, yet there are many threats we face: 1. Overfishing 2. Water quality 3. Loss of habitats 4. Climate change and sea-level rise 5. Ocean acidification 6. Harmful algal blooms 7. Dead zones 8. Oil spills Monterey Bay is an ideal natural laboratory for studying many of these coastal issues.
