The Wizard of Oz synopsis: Dorothy Gale, a young girl who lives on a farm in Kansas with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry, gets in the way while the adults try to work. She finds a quiet place where she won’t get into any trouble She is upset because their mean neighbor, Miss Gulch, has a Sheriff’s summons to take her cherished dog, Toto. Toto escapes from Miss Gultch’s and joins Dorothy as she runs away from the farm. Professor Marvel, convinces her to go back home. A cyclone hits the area, and Dorothy is accidently hit on the head. This begins their journey to the Land of Oz. When she wakes up in Oz, Dorothy is greeted by Glinda, the Witch of the North Dorothy’s house inadvertently lands on and fatally strikes the Wicked Witch of the East. This frees the Munchkins and the Wicked Witch of the West comes to avenge her sister’s death and to claim her sister’s magic ruby slippers, only to find that Glinda has already put them on Dorothy’s feet. Dorothy wants to go back home to Kansas, so Dorothy is off to see the Wizard. Along the way she meets three friends and travel companions. The Scarecrow. The Tinman, and the Lion. Each agree to accompany Dorothy to ask the Wizard for gifts only he can give. Our travelers arrive at the Emerald City. The travelers must prove themselves worthy of the Wizard’s help by bringing him the Wicked Witch of the West’s broomstick. So off the foursome goes, to the land of the Winkies and the Wicked Witch’s castle. The group is in the haunted forest filled with jitterbugs that spook them and they all collapse from exhaustion. The Wicked Witch’s flying monkeys swoop down and capture Dorothy and Toto. The Lion, Scarecrow and Tinman make it to the castle to rescue Dorothy. The foursome and Toto are reunited, but the Wicked Witch prevents their escape until Dorothy throws a bucket of water at the fire in Scarecrow and ends up dousing the Wicked Witch. She screams and melts into nothing. The foursome take the broom back to the Wizard. The Wizard is reluctant to see the travelers, but Toto playfully pulls aside the curtain that separates the Wizard from them. An ordinary man (Professor Marvel) speaking into a microphone is revealed. As the Wizard he grants all of their wishes and gets ready to go back to Kansas with Dorothy in his balloon. It accidently takes off without Dorothy and Toto, but Glinda saves the day. She explains to Dorothy that all this time, Dorothy has had the power herself to go home. All she has to do is close her eyes, tap her heels together three times and repeat to herself “there’s no place like home.” Back in Kansas the storm is over. Dorothy wakes up confused, with a bump on her head. Dorothy appreciates her family and friends even more than ever. CAST OF CHARACTERS Dorothy Gale Aunt Em (Emily Gale) Uncle Henry (Henry Gale) Miss Gulch/Wicked Witch of the West Zeke/Cowardly Lion Hickory/Tinman Hunk/Scarecrow Professor Marvel/The Wizard of Oz Glilnda, the Good Witch of the North Munchkins: Citizens, Mayor, Coroner, Barrister, Fiddler Braggart, School teachers, Tough Guys, City Fathers Winkies, Flying Monkeys, 4-6 Dancers Scarecrow Witch? Huh! I’m not afraid of a Witch! I’m not afraid of anything…oh, except a lighted match. But I’d face a whole box full of them for the chance of getting some brains. Look – I won’t be any trouble, because don’t eat a thing, and I won’t try to manage things, because I can’t think. Won’t you take me with you? Some people without brains do an awful lot of talking, don’t they? Tinman Well, when I was flesh and blood like you, I fell in love with a Munchkin maiden whose mother hated me. So to stop me from marrying her daughter she hired the Wicked Witch of the West to put an evil spell on my axe. When I tried to chop down a tree it chopped off my leg instead. Lion I haven’t got any courage at all. I even scare myself. Look at the circles under my eyes. I haven’t slept in weeks. My life has been simply unbearable. Even my family’s disowned me. When I was just a little cub, my father took me to the top of a high mountain and waved his paw around and said, “One day son, all this will be yours.” Oh – I was terrified! Professor Just make yourself comfortable while I conjure out of the air, out of thin air this very same genuine magic authentic crystal used by the priests of Isis and Osiris in the days of the Pharaohs of Egypt, in which Cleopatra first saw the approach of Julias Caesar and Marc Antony….and…and so on and so on… West Witch Very well, I’ll bide my time and as for you, my fine lady, it’s true I can’t attend to you here and now as I’d like. But after a suitable period of mourning, I will have those slippers and my revenge too. So best try to stay out of my way. Just try! I’ll get you eventually, my pretty…and your little dog too! Glinda Well I’m a little muddled. The Munchkins called me because a new witch has just dropped a house on the Wicked Witch of the East, and there’s the house, and here you are, and those legs are all that’s left of the Wicked Witch of the East. And so, what the Munchkins want to know is, are you a good witch or a bad witch? Dorothy Oh Jeepers! My heart’s thumping so loud I can’t hardly breathe. Toto…Toto. No need to be scared anymore. She ain’t follwin’ us. I won’t let her touch you nohow! Well, I…I think that it…that it isn’t enough just to want to see Uncle Henry and Auntie Em. And it’s that…if I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own back yard, because if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with. Is that right? .
