PAULA SCHER Paula Scher is a contemporary American artist and graphic designer best known for her posters, logo designs, and album covers. In her paintings, Scher portrays large-scale maps filled with intricate lettering that indicate political and societal connections between countries and regional borders. “The job of the designer is to make things understandable, usable, accessible, enjoyable, and important to a public, that involves the public,” she has explained. Born on October 6, 1948 in Washington, D.C., she went on to study at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia before moving to New York, where she worked as a layout artist for Random House. In the years that followed, Scher held posi- tions at both Atlantic Records and CBS Re- cords, during which time she received four Grammy nominations for her album de- signs. The artist later joined Pentagram, a design consulting firm in New York, where she continues to live and work. Today, Scher’s works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others. STEFAN SAGMEISTER Born in Austria in 1962, Stefan Sagmeister was originally on a path to become an engineer. After shifting his course in life towards design he studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna andd was accepted at the Pratt Institute in New York on a Fullbright Scholarship after that. He first started working professionally in the field for Leo Burnett, in their Hong Kong office in 1991. After a short stint there he began working with Tibor Kalman at his studio M&Co. It wasn’t long after that that Tibor announced he was closing the doors on M&Co, in 1993, and Sagmeister formed Sagmeister, Inc. He has been there ever since. His studio is very small in size and he works only with clients that ap- peal to him. He astonished the de- sign community in 2000 when he closed the doors on his studio and took a year off for personal reflec- tion. When he came back he pub- lished his first book, Made You Look. Thoroughly convinced that the re- flection process was important in his continued creativity he has toured the design circuit giving many lec- tures and presentations about his personal success. He continues to operate his studio where he works for clients from a wide range of industries including fashion and music. DAVIDCarsonCarson David Carson is an American graph- ic designer and art director. He is best known for his innovative magazine de- sign, and use of experimental typography. He was the art director for the mag- azine Ray Gun, in which he employed much of the typographic and layout style for which he is known. In particular, his widely imitated aesthetic defined the so- called “grunge typography” era. Designers all over the world were try- ing imitate his style.
