ElevenspecieswerenewforTurkishfauna;ofthese3specieswererecordedforthefirsttimeasAsianfauna.Furthermore,3 specieswereendemicforTurkey.ThedistributionandnewareasaswellasthehostplantsofsomespeciesaroundTurkeyandth e worldweregiven.Foreachspeciesitschorotypewasreported. Tenthredinidaeisbestrepresentedinthenorth temperateregion;speciesrichnesstendstodecrease ThefamilyTenthredinidae(Symphyta,Hymenoptera) fromnorthtosouth.Therearemorethan6000species arecalled“TypicalSawflies”;itisalargefamily,including in360generaintemperateregionsoftheNorthern morethanseven-eighthsofallmembersofthesuborder Hemisphere(Liston,1995;GouletandHuber,1993; Symphyta(Chalastogastra)(Comstock,1964).Theadults Lacourt,1999;TaegerandBlank,1998).Morethan900 areoftenbrightlycolored,andareusuallyfoundon speciesoccurinEurope(Liston,1995). *ThisstudyispartoftherequirementsforthedoctoraldegreesubmittedtoAtatürkUniversityon01.11.2002. 37 AContributiontotheKnowledgeoftheTenthredinidae(Symphyta,Hymenoptera)FaunaofTurkey PartI:TheSubfamilyTenthredininae Thereisconsiderabledisagreementoverthe Erzurum,Turkey(EMET),wasevaluatedandincludedin compositionofthevarioussubordinategroups.Fittonet thiswork.Althoughthespecimenshavebeencollectedin al.(1978)adoptedthesystemproposedbyBenson differentpartsofthecountry,themajorityofthesawfly (1952,1958).GauldandBolton(1988)followedthe sampleswerecollectedfromeasternTurkey.Thehabitats classificationofSmith(1979)andrecognized7 weremainlyalpinemeadows,mountaintundra, subfamilies.Morerecently,Lacourt(1999)dividedthe roadsides,anduncultivatedareasbetweencultivated familyTenthredinidaeinto14subfamiliesinhiscatalog. lands,orchardsandopenareasinforests.Besidesthe adultscollectedbyinsectnet,immaturestagesofsawflies Althoughvariouscontributionshavebeenconducted werealsocollectedandrearedunderlaboratory ontheirtaxonomy,biologyanddistributionaswellasthe conditionstoobtainadults.Thematerialsmentionedin damagecausedtoagriculturalandornamentalplantsby thisstudyweredepositedinEMET,Turkey.For sawfliesinthePalearcticregion(Enslin,1918; determinationofthematerial,Benson(1952)and Zhelokochev,1928;Benson,1950,1951,1952,1958, Medvedev(1994)wereused,andfortaxasynonyms 1967,1968;Kontuniemi,1965;Zombori,1972,1973, Lacourt(1999)wasfollowed.Undeterminedspecimens 1974a,1974b,1977,1978,1979,1981,1982a, wereidentifiedandothersreviewedbyDr.DavidR. 1982b,1984,1985;MoczarandZombori,1973; SmithandDr.LajosZombori. Chevin,1975,1984;Muche,1975;Vikberg,1975; Smith,1976,1981,1982,1986;Shaw,1978;Vassilev, Generaandspeciesweretreatedinalphabeticalorder 1978;Altenhofer,1980;Cingovski,1980,1982;Schedl, inthesubfamilies.Allrecordswerearrangedinthe 1981,1991;Scobiola-Palade,1981;Liston,1981, followingway:“province(alphabeticallyordered):town, 1983a,1983b,1983c;MeitznerandTaeger,1982; localplace,geographicnameandaltitudeifavailable,date ViitasaariandVikberg,1985;Magis,2002),theTurkish ofcollecting,numberofindividualsasmaleandfemale” faunaiscomparativelypoorlystudieddespiteits (exceptthewidespreadspeciesoccurringinErzurum zoogeographicinterest.Thefirstcomprehensivestudyon province).Thenameoftheprovincefromwhicha thesawflyfaunaofTurkeywasconductedbyGuichard particularspecieswasrecordedforthefirsttimewas andHarvey(1967).Benson(1966,1968)madea giveninboldtype.SpeciesnewforTurkishfaunawere faunisticalandsystematicalstudyontheSymphytaof specified.
