TThe mission of La Salle Academy, a rigorous college preparatory high school, is to educate students of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds with special outreach to those most in need. We provide a nurturing environment, which fosters spiritual, moral, intellectual, emotional and physical growth in the Roman Catholic tradition and the Lasallian spirit, as embodied in St. John Baptist de La Salle. We create experiences of community within the school and encourage each student to develop their gifts and talents for their own growth, as well as engage in the caring service of others, through its academic, extra-curricular and spiritual programs. La Salle in the City Federal Hall, New York, NY La Salle in the City provides a menu of curriculum-based cultural experiences for students. This focus on action-based learning provides opportunities for education for our students outside the classroom by taking advantage of public events and institutions related to the instructor’s educational goals. The program offers students experiences they may not otherwise have the ability to enjoy, connecting theory to function. Designed to demonstrate the practical application of classroom instruction, La Salle in the City better prepares our students for “real world” critical thinking necessary to succeed in society. Students can participate in this unique program according to grade level, site interest and approval by the administration. For students interested in travel, La Salle in the City offers adventures to Salem, Massachusetts; New Orleans; and Washington, D.C. La Salle in the City brings our future financiers to the floor of the New York Stock Exchange in the heart of Wall Street. The nature of the visits to these various La Salle in the City sites has a direct correlation with their classes and curriculum. Fall Semester African American Day Parade – This is an opportunity for our students to celebrate African American history. La Salle students join the community to highlight African American history and salute African people throughout the world for their outstanding achievements by marching in the Annual African American Day Parade in Harlem. Bishop’s Christmas Luncheon – Sponsored by the Catholic Foundation for Brooklyn and Queens, this event has raised over $750,000 to secure the continued success of Catholic school students and places of faith in the Brooklyn communities. This is a wonderful event for students to meet new African American Day Parade people while representing La Salle Academy. Cardinal’s Christmas Luncheon – Catholic Charities, in collaboration with the Ladies of Charity, host this annual holiday tradition. It raises funds to benefit women and children served by agencies and programs affiliated with Catholic Charities. La Salle Academy students with Mayor Bill de Blasio City Hall – Antonio Reynoso ‘01, a distinguished La Salle alumnus and New York City Councilman, will accompany students on a tour of the historic City Hall in downtown Manhattan. This trip allows students an inside look at what is known as the oldest City Hall in the United States, which houses the office of the Mayor of New York City and the chambers of the New York City Council. El Museo del Barrio – The mission of El Museo del Barrio is to present and preserve the art and culture of Puerto Ricans and all Latin Americans in the United States. Through its extensive collections, varied exhibitions and publications, bilingual public programs, educational activities, festivals and special events, El Museo educates its diverse public in the richness of Caribbean and Latin American arts and cultural history. By introducing young people to this cultural heritage, El Museo is creating the next generation of museum-goers, while satisfying the growing interest in Caribbean and Latin American art of a broad national and international audience. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York – Students learn about the role of the New York Federal Reserve Bank and the broader Federal Reserve System in setting monetary policy, promoting financial stability and serving communities to advance economic growth. Hispanic Celebration Mass – Students celebrate Hispanic Heritage month by celebrating Hispanic Mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. institution founded in 1853 by the same De La Salle Christian Brothers who founded La Salle Academy. This is an opportunity for students to visit a fellow Lasallian school and get a taste of the college experience they are striving for. Math Museum Tour – For students interested in mathematics, the Math Museum offers an increased understanding and a unique perception of mathematics. The Math Museum’s dynamic exhibits and programs will spark curiosity in the minds of the Lasallian students. Metropolitan Museum of Art – One of the most visited museums in the world, The Metropolitan Museum of Art offers thought-provoking paintings, sculptures and exhibits. Home to thousands of historical relics, MoMA offers a hands-on experience of history. The Museum also boasts a Math Museum Tour wonderful teen program that includes classes, workshops, special exhibits and internships for any student who wants to continue their exposure to a place of art and history. New York Post Tour – A trip to the New York Post opens the world of newspaper publishing to La Salle students. Established in 1801, the New York Post is one of the oldest continuously published newspapers. The New York Post is an ample place to learn how newspapers are developed, edited, printed and distributed on a daily basis. New York Stock Exchange – Thanks to distinguished alumnus Rick Taiano ’83, a group of 10 La Salle upperclassmen visit the New York Stock Exchange located in the heart of Wall Street. Students learn about the world of trading through EJ Securities, a brokerage services company. One World Observatory and 9-11 Memorial & Museum – Students journey to the top of One World Trade Center, the tallest and most iconic building in the Western Hemisphere, while learning about the history of New York City. In addition, students visit the 9-11 Memorial and Museum, which is an emotional tribute to those who lost their lives in the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. Salem, Massachusetts – The La Salle junior class visits the scene of the famous Salem Witch Trials in connection with their studies of The Crucible, by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Arthur Miller. This literature is brought to life while the students enjoy the fun of travelling to Salem, Massachusetts. San Gennaro Festival – La Salle students can be seen in a sea of red sweaters as they march in the Grand Procession at the 91st Annual Feast of San Gennaro. Students proudly represent La Salle on the streets of historic Little Italy, the lower Manhattan neighborhood, which served as the first home in America for hundreds of thousands of Italian immigrants beginning in the early part of the 20th century. The beloved Feast of San Gennaro is an annual celebration of the Patron Saint of Naples. Special Olympics Championships – La Salle will take 50 interested students to volunteer at the Special Olympics on Randall’s Island. This event enables the students to serve others and participate in the community. Spring Semester Black History Month Mass – His Eminence, Cardinal Dolan is the Principal Celebrant for this annual celebration of Catholic faith & Black culture, scheduled for the first Sunday of Black History Month in February, which is also the National Day of Prayer for the African American and African Family. The Mass is held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Students participate in this special Mass and celebrate Black History Month. Broadway Shows – One of the most celebrated features of New York, Broadway shows offer students some of the most entertaining traditions, brining art and literature to life. FDNY Training/Firefighter for a Day CBS Radio Station Tour – Bringing “Traffic and Weather Together” for years, CBS Radio Station is home to WCBS (AM), one of New York’s all-news radio stations. This trip offers a behind-the-scenes look at the constant flow of radio news used to keep listeners informed. El Repertorio Espanol – An Off-Broadway show founded in 1968, El Repetorio Espanol provides the best of Latin American, Hispanic and Latino plays to broad audiences. Located in Manhattan, the theater has received several awards and citations from organizations such as the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA). Students will come here to see La Gringa, the story of a young woman who leaves New York to Puerto Rico to discover her roots. Federal Court Mock Trials – Students are invited to participate in a Courthouse Program sponsored by the Honorable William C. Connor Inn of Court. Participants learn about the U.S. justice system through presentations by a U.S. Marshall’s Officer and other courthouse personnel, and a mock trial in which students deliberate as if they were a jury. The event ends with a reception and Q&A session with lawyers and federal judges. FDNY Training/Firefighter for a Day – Students learn about the New York City Fire Department’s team building and leadership practices through a hands-on experience at the FDNY Training Division on Randall’s Island.
