USAID INDONESIA URBAN WATER, SANITATION AND HYGIENE PENYEHATAN LINGKUNGAN UNTUK SEMUA (IUWASH PLUS) QUARTERLY PROGRESS REPORT 14 OCTOBER–DECEMBER 2019 CONTRACT NO. AID-497-TO-16-00003 Project Title: USAID IUWASH PLUS: Indonesia Urban Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Penyehatan Lingkungan untuk Semua Sponsoring USAID Office: USAID/Indonesia Office of Environment Contract Number: AID-497-TO-16-00003 Contractor: DAI Global, LLC Date of Publication: January 2020 Author: DAI Global, LLC COVER STORY In the 2019 KSAN, the Government of Indonesia Reaffirms Its Commitment to Achieve Safe Water and Sanitation for All “One of the indicators of a developed country is the availability of safe water and improved sanitation access for community. As such, a clean and healthy environment is created,” said the Vice President, Ma’ruf Amin when delivering a keynote speech during the 2019 KSAN (National Water and Sanitation Conference) held in Jakarta on December 2, 2019. Surakarta Mayor, FX Rudyatmo, is becoming one of the presenters in the KSAN is a conference that Bappenas and Pokja PPAS jointly talk show session. In this session, he is presenting on the combined water and conduct every two years. This conference serves as a domestic wastewater service in strategic advocacy medium for the national and local Surakarta city. governments, donors, and NGOs to reaffirm their TAUFIK SUGANDI/USAID IUWASH PLUS commitment to supporting water and sanitation development in Indonesia. In 2019, the KSAN was themed “Towards Safe, Innovative, and Sustainable Water and Sanitation for All” and consisted of a conference and festival. During the conference, the Minister of PPN/Head of Bappenas, Suharso Monoarfa, commended Indonesia on making a significant achievement to improve water and sanitation access from 2011 to 2018. During those seven years, access to improved water increased from 82.4 percent to 87.75 percent and access to improved sanitation escalated from 58.44 percent to 74.58 percent. These positive results were made partly due to the local governments’ innovations in advancing their water and sanitation development in their respective regions. One of them is Surakarta city—a USAID IUWASH PLUS supported city in Central Java. The Surakarta Mayor was one of the resource persons in the talk show session where he presented the city’s innovation in combining water supply and domestic wastewater service under PDAM Surakarta city. Through this mechanism, the water and sanitation service can be managed more efficiently, for instance PDAM’s customers are also registered to receive the desludging service. Despite this significant water and sanitation access improvement, the Minister of PPN/Head of Bappenas shared that Indonesia has a long way to go to achieve safe water and sanitation access for all. Therefore, collaboration and contribution from all parties are required to attain this goal. To support this event, USAID IUWASH PLUS also invited eight bloggers and two vloggers to share their experience and knowledge on safely managed sanitation to the festival visitors. The bloggers and vloggers had learnt the safely managed sanitation issue during Kumpul Blogger (blogger gathering) that USAID IUWASH PLUS conducted two weeks prior. ii | USAID IUWASH PLUS QUARTERLY
