The shops and offices of the Rotterdam Central Station are connected to a thermal storage circuit and are kept warm and cool by the currents released from the station. Moreover, the cold and warm air are not only stored but also constantly reused. Three large frequency controled heat pumps are installed to cover the heat demand. 4. Why would you define this project a best-practice example? Rotterdam Central is expected to save about 30 percent on energy costs from this form of renewable geothermal energy. This will result in an annual savings in CO2 versus conventional sources of energy of about 20,000 kg. CASE: TIMMERHUIS AND BEURS/WTC 1. What is the project about? At the corner of the Think and Red Sand, Timmerhuis Rotterdam has been redeveloped into a multifunctional building with shops, restaurants, offices and homes. The new City Hall has also been built in this area. In paying tribute to the city’s history, the characteristic L-shaped Stadstimmerhuis from the 1950s is preserved and renovated. All construction work completed in the 1980s to the same area was demolished in 2009. In the new Timmerhuis Rotterdam complex, there will be a underground garage of approximately 120 parking spaces. The ground floor is accommodating shops and space for general use. Above the ground floor, 4 floors are dedicated to offices for commercial purposes. The remaining floors above composed of a mix of large and small apartments. In June 2011, the Board announced that it had decided not to move the Urban Centre of the City Hall to the Town Office. Part of the ground floor of the new City Hall was originally designated for the Urban XL. Demonstrating the flexibility of the space’s design, this space can now be filled in other ways, such as with restaurants or shops. Location of the 12th IEA Heat Pump Conference! 2. What does the project include? The building has 92 apartments with roof gardens and outdoor spaces. Construction of the Timmerhuis Rotterdam began in August 2012. 3. How are heat pumps integrated? At this project, they decided to use the so called cluster approach. Three ETP-Heat Pumps exchange heat and cold not only from the soil. The installation also uses two different buildings: Beurs/WTC and Timmerhuis as sources. Here a small smart cold net is created. In the near future also nearby buildings as the town hall and the shopping mall can be connected to this multifunctional heat-grid. 4. Why would you define this project a best-practice example? On one side, the builders had to deal with installations in a monument. Which is why strict rules apply on construction. The other side was that the new build construction is being done within a set steel prefab-cage. The plumbing had to go in between those steel pipes. It is a paradox to integrate the new and the old, yet mission was accomplished. No other building like this ever got the BREEAM Excellent**** certificate. CASE: MAASTOREN 1. What is the project about? With the construction of the Maastoren, the Rotterdam skyline gained a new icon. Erected in the Kop van Zuid area, the Maastoren has a height of 165 m, making it the tallest building in the Netherlands. Its floor space is ap- proximately 57,000 m², of which approximately 35,000 m² is reserved for office space, 17,000 m² for parking (both underground and street level), 4,000 m² is reserved for the entrance and facilities and 700 m² for technical space. 2. What does the project include? A practical but flexible and sustainable design within a strict budgetary framework: this was the design assignment that Techniplan Adviseurs received from OVG Projectontwik- keling for the Maastoren project in Rotterdam. Techniplan Adviseurs’ commitment to sustainable energy earned them the engineering award De Vernufteling in 2007. One of the most interesting aquifer thermal energy storage – is used to generate heating and cooling energy in the building as well as supply the sprinkler system.
