Afghanistan Statistical Yearbook 2020 Issue No: 42 | April 2021 Afghanistan Statistical Yearbook 2020 Issues No: 42 | First Version April 2021 Executive Summary It is a matter of great pleasure for National Statistics and Information Authority (NSIA) as the only official statistical body in the country to have been able to publish the statistical yearbook of 2020, according to its publication calendar by timely data collection. This statistical yearbook depicts the socio-economic condition of the country and also provides an easy access to a rich source of statistical information and data which helps the ministries, government organizations, NGOs and the private sector as well as international community to formulate policies, programs and make evidence based decision. The data and statistical information in the statistical yearbook have been collected from ministries, government organizations and private sector providing data on economic and social sectors like population, agriculture, education, health, national accounts, consumer price index, energy, construction, mines and energy, services, foreign trade, finance, statistics and foreign aids which can be used by the planners and data users for better and evidence based planning. The Afghanistan’s population is estimated to be 32.9 million for 2020-2021 based on the population statistics department of NSIA. The men and women make up 16.8 million and 16.1million of the total population respectively. Based on the estimated population Graphs the urban population is 8.0 million while the rural population is 23.4 million and the remain 1.5 million is Kochi (Nomadic). The age dependent population is 12.0 million while 11.1 million population of the country is under 15 years of age and 0.9 million is above 64 years old. The returning refugees from Pakistan, Iran and other countries were 376 families comprising of 2147 individuals in the year 2020. The data on educational attainment of civil service employees working in government shows that in total 324620 employees there are 408 PhD 9042 MA/ MSc 88487 BA/BSc and 226683 employees have lower level of education than BA/BSc. I The higher education data indicates that in 2020 total number of students of the government higher education institutions together with that of the private educational institutions were 387946 which shows 8.6 percent decrease compared to the data of last year, comprising of 279094 males and 108852 females. The number of government and private universities and higher education institutions reached to 167 in 2020. There are 128 private and 39 government universities and higher education institutions where only 1 private institutions have increase comparing to 2019. Teachers of government and private universities have reached to 18998 where 2617 are female and 16381 are male. The university teachers have been increased by 0.5 percent compared to 2019. The total number of violence against women and girls in 2020 is 4531 events, it shows a inereas of 35,4 percent compared to the previous year. The number of crime in 2020 is 17903 event, it shows a decrease of 1.6 percent compared to the previous year. In this year, the number of traffic accidents is 2619 event, which is 11.9 percent less than the previous year. In 1354 sq. km of land was contaminated by mines, out of which 83 sq. km has been cleared. That is an increase of about 4.4 percent over last year while many provinces have not been cleared of mines due to insecurity and lack of donors. Data on public health indicates that in 2020 there were 2736 health centers. There were 2745 health centers throughout the country in 2019 which currently shows 0.3 percent decrease. These health centers include sub-centers, basic and comprehensive health centers. Th ese Facili es are nob sufie4ntas 2019 there are only 4 beds and 3 medical doctors available per 10000 people. Infectious diseases such as Malaria, Tuberculosis and AIDS existed in Afghanistan in 2020 where AIDs has increased. II The number of people living with AIDS in 2020 are 3066 which has increased by 5 percent compared to previous year. The aforementioned increase is alarming and should be taken in to consideration. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country was Afs 1520.39 Billion with GDP per capita of Afs 45754. The growth rate of real GDP was -1.9 percent in 2020. The share of agriculture, industry and services in total GDP were 27.01, 12.47 and 56.07 percent respectively. Consumer Price Index (CPI) indicates that inflation rate was 5.6 percent 10.0 percent in food items and 1.4 percent in non-food items) in Afghanistan in 2020. the inflation rate has increased compared to the last year which was 2.3 percent. Based on the consumer price, the highest inflation was in Herat province by 13.2% followed by Nangarhar province by 12.3% in 2020. Agricultural data in 2020 indicates that wheat production is 5.2 million metric tons which indicates 4% percent increase as compared to the previous year. The reason for increase in wheat production was increase in wheat cultivated area. The agricultural land under cereals cultivation has increased by 7% compared to previous year. Electricity production and import Graphs in the country shows that electricity production and import has decreased from 6197.62 million KWh in the year 2019 to 6182.74 KWh in the year 2020. Data on foreign trade indicates that in 2020 value of registered goods imports are 6537.6 million and that of exports are 776.7 million only. However, the values of imported goods are 6776.8 million and exports are 863.8 million in2019. This indicates decrease in the imports by 239.1 million or 3.5 percent and exports decreased by 87.1 million or 10.1 percent compared to the previous year. It is worth mentioning that the total imports include 253.5 million of electricity imports. III Exports of services amounted to 699.6 million in 2020, it shows a increase of 7.3 percent compared to 2019.Exports of goods and services totaled US$ 1476.3 million in 2020, to compare with 2019 it decreased by 2.6 percent. Import of services amounted to US$ 1103.5 million in 2020, it decreased by 9.0 percent compared to 2019. Import of goods and services totaled US$ 7641.1 million in 2020, to compare with 2019, it decreased by 4.4 percent. The air transportation data in 2020 indicate that the government airlines named Ariana has transported 586 tons of goods. The other side private airlines have transported 860 Tg passengers. Hereby, all data Users, Planners, Policy formulators, Academicians and Researchers are humbly urged to share their constructive ideas and critics for better improvement of NSIA publications.
