DEPARTMENT OF EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES M. S. RAMAIAH INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY At MSRIT we believe in the holistic development of students in a way that they evolve into full-fledged and confident professionals by the time they graduate. This can be made possible by encouraging them to engage in various extra-curricular activities such as music, theatre, literary, visual and fine arts, apart from sports, NSS and other similar pursuits. Extra-curricular activities are not just about entertainment, they help molding the personality of the students in the following ways: • Enhancing soft skills such as communication skills, etiquette and confidence levels. • Helping them in the areas of time management, emotion management, success (and failure) management, crisis management and more importantly people management. • While good grades equip students to get their first jobs, extra-curricular activities equip students with skills for their whole lives. • They help inculcating in students, values such as empathy, broad-mindedness, team- spirit, self-control, ethics, acceptance of pluralities in society, corporate social responsibility, and so on. MSRIT is the only college to have a separate department for cultural activities, known as the Department of Extra-Curricular Activities (DECA). Many events throughout the year such as cultural performances during conferences, excur-sions, talent search auditions, freshers’ events, festivals etc. Along with the programs hosted at MSRIT, the DECA also takes initiative to send the MSRIT student teams to various programs / events / competitions / fests organized at other institutions in the country. The students have brought back many laurels to themselves and to our Institution ensur-ing that MSRIT is among the top teams in the State in all cultural activities. The DECA also hosts a lot of student clubs in order to nurture talent and coordination skills in students. Student – driven Clubs at MSRIT Over the years, students of MSRIT have started several clubs in various genres of extra- curricular activities. These activities are driven by the members of the club with a coordinator at the helm of affairs and also to coordinate with DECA. A systematic way of taking forward the activities of the club happens every year where the coordinator of each club grooms a junior to take over when he graduates. This is, of course, with the consent of the Coordinator/Dy. Coordinator of DECA. For the current year, the following table gives the list of Clubs operating on campus, it’s coordinators and their contact details for the year 2017-18. DECA CLUBS (2018-2019) Sl. While the heart of 19a is its prolific writers and gifted designers, its backbone continues to be the ever supportive Department of Extra-Curricular Activities. Started in the year 2008, 19a was initially a hard copy. However, with the advent of social media, it was turned into a user friendly website, ‘www.the19a.com’, by the end of 2012 in order to increase its reach beyond the boundaries of MSRIT. The magazine caters to a plethora of interests such as MSRIT Scenes, Gaming, Sci-Tech, Music, Food, Comic, Sports, Pop Culture and many more. With twelve categories that are updated on a regular basis, the reader is certainly spoilt for choice! The enigma behind the name 19a continues to be their USP. For the uninitiated, the magazine is inspired by the Constitution of India and derives its name from the Article 19(a) which is a Fun-damental Right. The Article guarantees to all citizens, the freedom of speech and expression. Truly, an exceptional philosophy that invokes in each one of us the pride of being an Indian. Ever since its inception, 19a members have been doing the coverage for various events in col-lege including ShoutOut, Udbhav and Kannada Rajyothsava. A major milestone for 19a was ‘The Spectator’, the official report on MSRIT’s annual inter-collegiate fest, Udbhav ’14. Aptly named, it gave an account of each and every event conducted during the immensely successful fest through the perspective of an audience. ‘The Spectator’ was very well received and its reader-ship even caused the website to crash within a few hours of its launch! A popular quote in English Literature, ‘The pen is mightier than the sword’, is something that those at 19a associate with. Their members are active participants at literary events and have bagged various prizes at fests held in MSRIT and other colleges. With talent being the sole crite-rion for the selection process, one can find the best writers and designers of MSRIT at 19a. It would be an absolute injustice to call them the ‘19a team’. Because, they are more than just that. They are the 19a family. The Literary and Debating Society The Literary and Debating Society (LDS) of M.S Ramaiah Institute of Technology Over the years, The Literary and Debating has consistently broken the myth that only Law schools can excel in parliamentary debating. The success garnered by the LDS is in part due to the gracious support of the Department of Extra-Curricular Activities and in part due to the strong knowledge base and friendly environment that we have inherited from our senior batches. The LDS boasts of an overall membership of over 50 students and with each passing year that number is only increasing. Apart from Model United nations and General debating, the LDS focuses on two major streams of parliamentary debating namely- Asian Parliamentary and British Parliamentary format of debating. In the past few years the LDS has proven itself as a force to be reckoned with on national as well as international stages. We have consistently found a place in the quarters, semi-finals and finals of some of the major tournaments held in India and abroad, winning a few along the way. The LDS recently organized India’s biggest British Parliamentary Debate for the current academic year, Dr. M. S. Ramaiah Memorial Parliamentary Debate, which boasts a participation of 63 teams and about 50 adjudicators, from all across India. MSRMPD ‘14 was deemed a massive success and shall be looked as a metric for quality and efficiency for future tournaments to adhere to. The LDS office bearers are democratically elected for a specified period of time, as stated in the Constitution followed by the Society. For all practical purposes, the President and the Secretary represent MSRIT LDS at all debating forums globally and play a pivotal role in deciding the day- to-day proceedings of the Society. The MSRIT Theatre Society The MSRIT Theatre Society is one of the most reputed clubs of MSRIT. It has garnered appreciation from across the state, for the sheer theatrical prowess that its patrons boast of. Since its inception, the MSRIT Theatre Society has gradually established itself as a professional crew of like-minded artists who are passionate about their art and remains to be a source of abundant theatre talent at the college level. The Society is credited with being the birthplace of mainstream theatre groups such as Tea Arts and with being a nurturing ground for innumerable individual artists who have excelled in fields of professional theatre and cinema. The Society members have participated in various theatre-based awareness programs, such as: 1. Six members performed for Bangalore Mirror’s “Footpath My Foot” campaign. 2. Street Plays organised by well-known international non-government organisation CRY in which there was a 10 member contingent which participated.
