The last Tuesday in January is dedicated to this spectacle every year. Many thousands of locals and tourists come specifically to celebrate this regional festival with its Scandinavian cultural heritage. The Fire Festival of the North, sometimes also referred to as the "Viking Carnival", is supported by the widespread belief of the Shetland Islanders in their own Scandinavian roots and the need to counteract the hard dark winter with the power of the fire.
