The 2021 PFL playoffs kick off on Friday with the welterweight and lightweight division semi-finals. It all goes down from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. The first PFL playoff card of the year is headlined by the former Bellator welterweight champion, Rory MacDonald, as he takes on the 2019 PFL welterweight champion, Ray Cooper III. MacDonald is 4-3-1 since making his Bellator debut back in 2017, and is coming off a controversial decision loss to Gleison Tibau at PFL 6. Luckily for MacDonald, the first-round finish of Chris Millender propelled him into the playoff bracket. Cooper is 9-2-1 since making his PFL debut back in 2018, with eight of his nine PFL wins coming by way of stoppage. Cooper will look to capture the PFL welterweight championship for the second time in his career, having made the finals in both the 2018 and 2019 PFL playoffs. With 24 fighters across six divisions, the 2021 PFL playoffs kicked off on Friday, August 13 at 5:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+. The first of three playoff events will feature the Welterweights and the Lightweights. Despite the fact that MMA is already unpredictable, it will certainly be interesting to raise $1 million for each champion winner. The main event was a welterweight semifinal between reigning champion Ray Cooper III and UFC veteran Rory MacDonald. Cooper won both of his regular season fights, and MacDonald should have if not for a controversial decision. The winner will face Magomed Magomedkerimov or Sadibou Sy in the final. Magomedkerimov only fought once this season, but a first-round finish put him in the playoffs. On the contrary, Sy went 1-0 with one no contest and ended up in the play-offs after top division Joao Zeferino had to withdraw. In the lightweight class, Clay Collard was pitted against Raush Manfio in a semifinal. Both fighters defeated Anthony Pettis in the regular season and are trying to build that momentum. Not only did they beat Pettis, but both fighters also go into the playoffs 2-0. The second lightweight fight in the semifinals was between Loik Radzhabov and Alex Martinez. These fighters fought earlier this year, with Radzhabov winning via split decision. That said, everything changes when a $1 million chance is on the line. While most people tuned in for the main card playoffs, the prelims were filled with fighters looking to impress fans before the season is over. Fighters to watch in the preliminaries were Gleison Tibau, Olivier Aubin-Mercier, Magomed Umalatov and Elvin Espinoza. All things considered, let’s take a look at the full results and highlights for the first edition of the 2021 PFL playoffs. .
