Warren John Alien Charles, and lmdowner ELMHAN (NORTH) or NORTH ELMHAM, is a village, parish, and railway station in Launditch hundred, Mitford and Laun­ ditch union, archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich, rural deanery of Brisley, and East Dereham county court district, West Norfolk, distant 5 miles N. of East Dereham, and 18 N.W. by W. of Norwich. The living is a vicarage, in the patronage of Lord ~ondes, of the yearly value of £475 ; Rev. Augustus G. Legge, M.A., is the incum­ bent. The church of the Virgin Mary is a handsome structure, with square tower containing eight bells. The interior is neat, and con­ tains two handsome marble monuments in the memory of :Richard Warner and Richard Milles, Esqrs., forefathers of the present Lord Sondes, the former of whom was lord of the manor, and built Elmham Hall; he died in 1757. The Independents and Primitive Methodists have each a chapel. Here is also a National school. Elmham was anciently a city, and the seat of the Bishops of Norwich from 673 to 1075. In the reign of Richard II. Bishop Spencer obtained a licence to embattle and make a castle of his manor house at Elmham; some traces of the foundation and entrenchments remain. In Broom Close it is supposed there was a Roman station from a great number of nrns, coins, and other Roman antiquities having been found there. The Hall is a fine brick mansion, and is situated on an eminence, rising gently from· a beautiful sheet of water, which abounds with :pike and other fish, and is supplied by a brook run;ning through the :park to the river Wensum. The parish contains 4.401 acres, and the · :population in 1871 was 1,120. It is in two manors, viz., Elrnham Nawers, and North Elmham; Lord Sondes is lord of the former, and the Dean and Chapter of Norwich are lords of the latter. The Earl of Leicester owns 479 acres, and Caius College, Cambridge, about 120 acres, nearly all the remainder belongs to Lord Sondes. The Norfolk County School is situate about 1 ~ miles from the village of Elmham. H.R.H. the Prinoe of Wales, accompanied by H.R.H. the Princess of Wales, laid the foundation-stone on Easter Monday, 1873, and the above was opened in September, 187 4. The buildings are of flint and red brick, and stand on the summit of a hill overlooking the Wensum. The most striking feature is the Great Central Hall.
