It has the community worried and the Tertiary Education Union (TEU) is determined to help the lecturers that will be impacted. MIT says the main reason for this move is the decline in demand for these courses. The polytechnic cites the drop in demand to a buoyant labour market where people tend to choose employment over study. TEU organiser Chan Dixon says she doesn’t see any evidence of that in the South Auckland community. It still has a ‘‘higher than the national average statistics in joblessness, poverty, and formal training,’’ she notes. MIT chief executive Gus Gilmore says the institute is ‘‘not ending the delivery of its Foun- dation level courses.
