Pedersen elcome to the 132nd Audio Engineering Society Con- vention! For the first time, the European AES Conven- Wtion is hosted in the beautiful city of Budapest! I am sure that all of us will enjoy a unique combination of all the ben- efits of an AES Convention and the beautiful sights and life in Budapest. The scene is set for 4 days of extraordinary high quality professional and social life for everyone working with Audio—recording, education, loudspeakers, broadcasting, games, coding, headphones, audio forensics, audio perception, DSP, automotive audio, and much more. An AES Convention offers a multitude of opportunities—and I will encourage you to also explore other possibilities than the ones you already planned or know from earlier conventions. This time we have 22 Paper/Poster Sessions covering all major areas of audio engineering. Both on Friday and Saturday you can enjoy presentations of Engineering Briefs, which is a new and exciting opportunity to present and share experience and knowledge in various fields of audio. Fourteen Workshops offer yet another dimension of the con- vention by facilitating a more interactive way to share informa- tion between a panel of experts and the audience. Fifteen Tuto- rials will also allow everyone to get an in-depth introduction to specific areas of audio engineering. The Students are a vital part of the AES, which is reflected in the special Student Events that take place throughout the convention. Please make sure to visit the Exhibition that offers the special AES possibility of Science and Business to meet—because you will meet both the business people, R&D people, educators, and all other people working with audio. The Exhibition also offers the potential of first listening to the theory in a paper pre- sentation and later the same day, to see the product in real life and maybe initiate business relations based on this. I would like to thank Convention Chair Janos Gyori and his great team for organizing this fantastic AES event! This thank you extends to all of the AES staff, headed up by Executive Di- rector Bob Moses, who on a daily basis make the AES the pre- ferred place to be for people working with audio. During the previous AES conven- tions in the UK, I travelled several times by the London Wtube, the first underground railway of the world. I was thinking, since the first underground railway of the European conti- nent was built in Budapest after the one of London, what if the next AES convention could be held in Budapest? The thought became reality, and this is the first time we welcome the AES con- vention to Hungary. Budapest has a rich scientific and cultural tradition. Numerous scientists worked here, including Gyorgy Bekesy who was award- ed the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his research on the function of the cochlea in the mammalian hearing organ. Famous composers such as Bela Bartok lived here; the Music Academy of Budapest was named after its first director, Ferenc Liszt. I am satisfied to see many practical topics in our 132nd Techni- cal Program. We will hear about the broadcast experts’ topic Loudness Control from several points of view. Presenters will share noticeable research results at Paper Sessions. Numerous research topics will be presented in the field of Spatial Audio. We will find new and interesting topics during eBrief presenta- tions. And for those who are involved in the pop music industry or simply fanatics of vintage technology, it will be surely interesting to take part in the tutorial “The Making of The Beach Boys Smile Sessions” by producers Mark Linett and Barry Marshall. As a Tonmeister, I also expect a lot of fun at the Recording Competition for the students this year. I guess, many of us will have a problem with choosing from the several parallel sessions. We encourage attendees to take part in the Technical Tours, as well. You will be guided around the Palace of Arts, which was built with a special isolation-technique, being close to a Danube-bridge full of traffic. Bartok-Hall is a part of this complex. Another facility being visited is the Acoustical Laboratory at the Technical Univer- sity of Budapest. This would be a good choice for visitors interest- ed in measurement in educational practice. We invite you to the organ recital of Graham Blyth. It will be held in one of the oldest buildings of Pest, the Downtown Church. The more than 1,000-year-old church had almost been destroyed 5 132_entire book_Convention Program Master 4/13/12 4:33 PM Page 6 several times in the storms of history but it has continuously been restored. The organ has recently been rebuilt, as well. In 2011, the year of Liszt, this instrument was the heart of many great con- certs. It is also a special privilege that the organist Graham Blyth will also give the Heyser Memorial Lecture entitled, “In Pursuit of Ele- gant Simplicity: Life, Luck, and Learning in Music and Audio.” Gra- ham, who was the co-founder of Soundcraft in 1973 is still active both on the field of audio engineering and organ design. The Banquet will be held at a remarkable place of scientific his- tory, in the beautiful halls of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, from where there is a wonderful view onto the Buda Castle on the other side of the Danube.
